THE FIVE: N. California Preseason All-State Catchers

Ryan Ozella
N. California Area Scout

STOCKTON, CA - We've begun position analysis taking a look at standouts from each position in our series THE FIVE. Today we take a look at standout catchers from the Northern California preseason event. These catchers weren't the only standouts, but the staff collaborated and these catchers made the strongest impressions. Earlier we posted a Quick Hits story with multiple early standouts from the day. We also previously released our stats leaders and pitchers

Today we look to dig a little deeper into the six (yes, a bonus to THE FIVE!) catchers who we feel have a chance to be standout at the college level. Players are listed in no particular order.

NOTE: Players are listed in no particular order. Position listed is the primary position players have listed in their profiles. Be sure to click on the player profile for full video from this event and any additional scouting notes from other viewings of the player.

Scouting Report

1/27/19 - PBR N CA Preseason All-State - Medium frame with high, tight waist and nicely proportioned with strength growing; athletic and shows twitchy attributes with strong run times more inline with MIF (7.18 60-yd). Quick and agile behind the plate with smooth footwork allowing big arm to put ball on the bag (1.89-2.01 pop. 76 MPH); agility really shows up when blocking and in catching skills where he is able to smother pitches and keep ball in front close. Offensively starts narrow with relaxed elbows, even hands and flat bat; foot lift with balance in backside as hands work back slightly before finishing in strong hitting position. Very similar profile on both sides of the plate. Bat drives through extension with upward path made to do damage and drive balls deep into gaps (87 exit velo); back hip is very quick and helps achieve full turn in swings. One of the top 2021 players in the State. Uncommitted currently; very impressive player who will impact college levels.
