Team CA West Coast Games: Day 3 Recap

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - With Day 1 and Day 2 in the books, the focus turned to the final day of the West Coast Games. Sunday energy was alive and well with both squads hungry for victory. California Gold was able to secure a dramatic 5-4 win over Arizona to finish the weekend 2-1 overall. California Red bats came alive early, defeating Nevada 8-0 and finishing 1-1-1 overall. Successful weekend overall for California as a whole with a 3-2-1 combined record and a group of pleased participants.

Scouting Notes

+ AJ Guiliana finished the weekend with a hit in all three games. Had a lot of success going with the pitch, not trying to do to much and putting barrel to ball. Extremely active one the bases with multiple stolen bases and runs scored. Guiliana played second, third, short and outfield - showing his athletic ability but still unclear of what his position will be long term. The uncommitted Torrey Pines senior has had a productive summer and is setting himself up for a big senior season. 

+ Collin Adams had the most efficient and statistically successful pitching appearance of the weekend. Twirling 4 shutout innings on 46 pitches. The left-hander mixed his pitches well, kept the ball low in the zone, tunneled his changeup off the fastball away, kept his defense active and secured the victory. The velocity might not be where he wants it but the pitchability shows plenty of next level ability. 

+ Holden Carpenter battled for the Gold team, grinding out 5 innings in 100+ heat and keeping his team within striking distance for the win. The left-hander threw an array of pitches and threw offspeed ahead and behind in the count. The senior San Marcos left-hander has the stuff, poise and pitching IQ to put up big numbers for a loaded Knights team and find himself playing in college. 

+ Hunter Kaul had a productive weekend overall and showed leadership in the dugout and behind the dish. The strong and athletic catcher showed off his blocking skills and framing skills throughout his appearances behind the dish. The bat stays through the zone well and has present line drive ability. The junior catcher has ability to stay behind the dish at the next level and is looking like one of the better uncommitted catchers in the San Diego section. 

+ Jarrett Segura hit all weekend, if there was an all West Coast Games team, he would be on it. Multiple RBI hits in big spots, loud extra base hits and the look and feel of a productive D1 hitter. The power is starting to really show himself and has 10 HR potential at the college level. Segura's staying at third could really boost his value but he has the size and strength to be a productive first baseman. Defensively the picks at first saved outs and runs throughout the weekend. 

+ Kai Price is a kid we have had multiple looks at recently and he has improved after each outing. FB was firm at 83-85 T86 that got up on hitters in a hurry and his breaking ball showed slurvy break that missed bats. Bounced back from a tough first to have a real clean second and third inning for three shutout innings. Arm works quick in the action with present armspeed and with some increased implementation of his lower half a 3-4 mph bump is possible.
+ Devon Eskridge had quite the Standout DudeDay last week and had his best West Coast Games performance in the finale. Barreled up two balls, one a line drive off the third baseman and an oppo LD single to right. Bat is quick with above-average bat and hand speed. Eskridge has a larger athletic build at 6-3 190lbs that projects well for even more power at the plate. A name to follow as he is only a ‘23.
