SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The Trosky Redbirds Scout Day brought close to 50 players together to take part in the showcase and were put through a standard pro-style workout that included the 60-yard sprint, round of batting practice, defensive workouts at respective positions, and concluded with bullpen sessions where the pitchers' stats were compiled.

We will roll out individual reports in the coming days/weeks where we’ll break down players a little more closely. In the interim we thought we’d highlight a few early standouts from the event.

(Note: All showcase videos will be added to player profiles in the near future)

THE PLAYERS

Jack Hostetler RHP / OF / San Dieguito Academy, CA / 2021

Showed an overall game that will make the 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior a player to follow in the next 18-24 months. There’s some “rawness” to his game but there’s also a lot to like. Whether it’s the strength at the plate where he squared everything up (90 mph max EV), or the stuff on the mound that really projects, or his athleticism in the outfield where the arm is big (86 mph), Hostetler is a toolsy high ceiling, high floor prospect.

Jack Zerr RHP / University City, CA / 2021

At 6-foot-3, 225-pounds with squared shoulders, a thick lower half, and room to grow, Zerr has the look of a pitcher as he gets on the mound. Works downhill and generates significant movement on all his pitches. Fastball (84-86 mph) flashes significant rising action (21.3” avg IVB) and life at the plate. Showed the ability to spot it to all quadrants from a high 3/4 slot. Curveball really projects at 68-70 with depth and an average IVB of -8.7” putting him in the top 5% of high school pitchers and top 25% of NCAA pitchers. Zerr showed feel for the changeup working around the zone with the pitch.

McCabe Moyer OF / 1B / Cathedral Catholic , CA / 2022

The leadoff hitter during the BP portion, Moyer set the tone and expectation for the rest of the hitters behind him. Sprayed line drive from the right field line to center field with ease from a simple, loose setup where he uses a slight front leg stride before his fast hands (25 mph) drive his barrel to-and-through the ball. There’s power (92 mph max EV) in the frame at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. There’s also athleticism as he showed during the workout portion clocking a 7.10 laser-timed 60 and showing excellent range in the outfield where his arm (86 mph) plays way up in part to his instincts and ability to get to balls quickly.

Noah Lazuka SS / 2B / San Marcos , CA / 2021

Intriguing middle infielder with quickness, instincts and a strong accurate arm on the dirt. After clocking a 7.05 laser-timed 60, Lazuka showed plenty of range to both sides while moving lightly on his feet with athletic actions. That athleticism showed itself at the plate where he showed a simple setup with quick hands and a right side approach peppering the RCF gap with line drives consistently. Gets the barrel on plane early in swing and maintains through extension. There’s strength (92 mph max EV) with present bat speed (68 mph) that add to the intrigue of the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Lazuka.

AJ Klubeck SS / RHP / Westview, CA / 2023

An underclass amongst a large group of upperclassmen Klubeck made sure he was known at the end of the day. Posted a 7.04 laser-timed 60 before showing a hit tool that sees him use the middle of the field well. Bat is quick as are the hands. At 6-foot, 150-pounds, the swing relies on the hands/arms more to get the barrel through the zone. With added strength the bat really projects. Soft hands with good footwork/body control and range to both sides on defense. Arm strength is fair at 72 mph with accuracy.

Kaden Hustead LHP / OF / San Marcos , CA / 2021

Arguably the top uncommitted pitcher in the San Diego area, Hustead is a lefty who throws nothing straight out of the hand. Average spin on all pitches who is in-and-around the zone with his three-pitch mix. Four seam and two-seam command, movement and life stand out from behind the mound and plate. Spikes changeup at time while the slider will play and projects. At 6-foot-4, 195-pounds, Hustead has plenty of room for physical gains.

Steven Lancia C / 3B / Scripps Ranch, CA / 2021

We’ve seen Lancia several times over the course of the last year and all he continues to do is hit. His approach is made possible by his strength that sees him hit line drives to all fields with present pull side power. Athletic catcher that can move well (7.04 60) from the crouched position. With pop time times in the 1.89-2.02 range, the improved accuracy and strength (81mph) play way up.

Sebastian Mejorado 3B / SS / El Camino, CA / 2021

There’s a lot to like from the athletic 6-foot-1, 185-pound Mejorado. Clocked a 7.18 laser-timed 60 before putting on a BP show. Pounded balls to center-left field throughout his round going off the building 30 feet beyond the net four times for loud home runs. It’s a simple, yet powerful (94 max EV), stroke at the plate that uses a slight leg lift and stride before his explosive hands drive into the ball. Defensively he fits the profile at the third base where the arm plays along with the range and footwork.

Connor Saccullo 3B / OF / Jserra Catholic, CA / 2021

Saccullo is a guy I’m familiar with from his time at JSerra and he simply continues to improve on all levels of his game. Clocked a 7.03 laser-timed 60 to start his day showing athletic running movements that indicate he may be able to trim a bit more off that time. One of the more consistent rounds of BP in terms of repeating his stroke and maintaining consistency with the barrel. He was a line drive machine with a few off the tall net in left field. Defensively his athleticism plays up a bit in the outfield where the arm is strong (84 mph) and accurate. Showed good footwork while funnelling out front and not wasting steps before throwing. Range was fair on the infield and plays now at third base. Arm was accurate and strong (81 mph) there too.

Patrick McLellan OF / 3B / Westview , CA / 2021

McLlellan showed himself to be a quick, athletic outfielder that plays loose and with outstanding fundamentals and control. Plays light on his feet as he strides around in the outfield taking direct routes to the ball and coming up ready to throw (82 mph) with accuracy and carry on throws. Clocked a 7.08 laser-timed 60 to open things up. At the plate there’s a plan and he stuck to it throughout BP keeping his hands inside the ball and driving balls to the middle-left part of the field consistently on a line. Intriguing player going into the spring because there’s little doubt he can play beyond high school.
