San Diego, Calif. - The Uncommitted Spotlight Series returns as we are ramping into full scale regular season mode with the 2025 CIF High School baseball season underway for the '25 class as they look to close their high school careers on a high note. With that in mind Prep Baseball California is highlighting some of the top uncommitted class of '25 athletes for college programs to be following this spring season.

Today, we put the spotlight on one of the top uncommitted arms in San Diego, ‘25 LHP Matthew Garrison from Point Loma High School in San Diego, California. Garrison has been a force on the mound since 2023, which was his first season on varsity as a sophomore, and both of the opportunities I’ve had to see him pitch in 2025 have only reinforced my opinion on him as a premier pitcher across San Diego.

Over the past two seasons, Garrison has put together quite the resume solidifying himself as the ace of the Point Loma pitching staff. He has posted a career varsity ERA of 1.19 over 99.2 innings. When he delivered a stellar 2024 campaign where he posted a 1.24 ERA in 73.2 innings, he capped it off by throwing a one-hit complete-game shutout in the CIF San Diego Section Division II championship game. His dominant outing played a crucial role in securing the title for Point Loma, solidifying his reputation as a big-game pitcher.

A preseason winter game back in January was my first time seeing Garrison pitch. He was efficient in two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two. His fastball showed consistent arm-side run, and his curveball had sharp vertical break. I didn’t have the radar gun on him this particular afternoon but his stuff was coming out of his hand with deception and was giving opposing hitters a tough time to connect with solid contact. This brief but effective outing provided an early look at what would eventually be a preview of his Opening Day start to begin the 2025 season.

Garrison’s first regular season start in 2025 was nothing short of dominant. The senior southpaw delivered a commanding start, tossing four shutout innings while allowing just four hits and racking up six strikeouts on 84 pitches.

Garrison faced early adversity in the first inning, issuing two free passes, but quickly worked his way out of trouble with a timely strikeout to end the frame. From that point on, he was in complete control, navigating the Mt. Carmel lineup with precision. Over the next three innings, he surrendered only two additional hits and never allowed a runner to advance past second base.

His fastball, which sat consistently at 84-85 MPH with arm-side run, was his primary weapon, making up roughly 80% of his pitch mix. He demonstrated the ability to paint all four quadrants of the zone and induced numerous swings and misses when elevating the pitch in two-strike counts. His ability to tunnel his fastball effectively with his secondary offerings made him even tougher to hit. Garrison’s 12/6 curveball, sitting at 72-73 MPH, was a difference-maker in his arsenal. He showed confidence in the pitch, using it to generate two of his strikeouts, including a final punchout to cap off his day. Additionally, he flashed a developing arm side run changeup at 75-76 MPH, which he used sparingly but effectively, particularly against right-handed hitters, keeping them off balance by locating it down and away off the plate.

With an already outstanding high school career thus far, and an ability to command the zone, change speeds effectively, and maintain his poise in pressure situations, college programs should have their eyes on Garrison as a valuable addition to their 2025 recruiting class.
