5A Championship Weekend Roundup

5A Semi-Final Roundup

The four teams left standing in the 5A State Baseball Tournament met on Saturday at All-City Stadium to narrow the field down to 2.  Cherokee trail came into Saturday’s action as the only unbeaten team, meaning they had a spot secured in the championship game and would have to be beaten twice.

Saturday May 28, 2016 

Cherokee Trail 9 Mullen 2 (10:00)
The Cougar’s got the game 1 win and were led at the plate by Nick Perez who was 2-3 with 2 RBI.  The story of the game was pitcher Keven Mackintosh who went all 7 innings, giving up 7 hits, 2 runs and striking out 7 Mustangs.

Rocky Mountain 17 Cherry Creek 4 (12:30)
The Lobos advanced to the championship game with the win over the Bruins.  The Lobos scored 17 runs on 15 hits and were led at the plate by Jadon Uhrich who was 2-3 with 1 run and 2 RBI and Spencer Gendreau who went 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.

Cherokee Trial and Rocky Mountain met Sunday at All-City Stadium for the 5A baseball title.  The day lived up to its billing with Rocky Mountain taking the first game 2-0 over the Cougars.

The Lobos turned to John Sorensen in game 1 who went 7 innings, scattering 7 hits, allowing 0 runs and struck out 4.  Kadin Breeze provided the offense for Rocky Mountain by going 1-3 with 1 double and driving in the only 2 runs of the game.  For the Cougars, Conner Nantkes went 6 innings allowing, 2 hits, 2 runs and he struck out 2.  Michael Morris and Jerome Bohannon had 2 hits each for Cherokee Trial.

Game 2 

The Rocky victory set up a winner take all second game.  Rocky picked up where they left off in game one and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Cherokee Trial thanks in part to a homerun by Easton Dolan in the bottom of the second innings.  

Cherokee Trial got new life in the game when Eric Cox hit a 2 run homerun to right center field in the top of the 3rd inning to cut the lead to 3-2.  The Cougars wasted no time taking the lead in the game in the top of the 4th inning on a 2 run double by John-Michael Osley.  This was the first of 2 run scoring double Osley had on the day.  He finished the day with 3 RBI. 

Jerome Bohannon was on the mound for Cherokee Trial and allowed only 1 run from the bottom of the 3rd on.  Cherokee Trial added 4 more runs in the top of the 6th and 1 more in the 7th to take a 9-3 lead into the bottom of the 7th.  

Bohannon seemed to get stronger as the game went on and got Spencer Gendreau looking for the final out of the game, giving the Cougars the 5A State Baseball Title.

The Cougars were led by John Michael Osley who was 2-4 with 1 run, 3 RBI and 2 doubles, Eric Cox who went 2-4 with 1 run, 2 RBI and 1 homerun and Jerome Bohannon who was 2-3 with 1 run and 2 RBI.  Bohannon also added 7 Innings, allowing 7 hits, 3 ER and he struck out 6.  The Lobos were led by, John Sorensen who was 2-3 with 1 run, 1 RBI and 1 double and Easton Dolan who was 1-3 with 1 run, 1 RBI and 1 homerun.
