Centennial State Games Player Spotlights

The 2nd Annual Centennial State Games are in the books.  Over the four day event, scouting staff from PBR Colorado traveled between host sites.  We made notes of players who had stand out games during the tournament.

Players who impressed:

Tanner O’Tremba, OF/RHP, Cherry Creek High School (2018)
2-3 day with 2 RBI and 1 double against ThunderRidge High School
A 6-foot-0, 210-pound right hand hitter who ran a 4.18 home to first, 4th fastest of the showcase.  At the plate he hits from a slightly open stance with a small stride to come square.  He shows quick hands to the ball and good hip rotation at contact.  He registered a showcase best 95 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he is smooth through the ball and has a good over the top delivery.  He had an 81 MPH arm velocity.

Jett Hoggat, C/OF, Rocky Mountain High School (2019)
2-3 in Semi-Final game against Diamond Baseball of Boulder
6-foot-0, 190-pound right hand hitting catcher/right hand pitcher who ran a showcase best 4.03 home to first.   At the plate he hits from an open stance with a slight leg kick to square up.  Hands are at the top for the zone and slightly wrap.  He hits off a firm front side and has quick hands that produce an 87 MPH exit velocity.  Behind the plate he is quiet and receives the ball well.  He stays low through the throw and delvers an accurate ball at 77 MPH and a 2.14 pop-time.  On the mound, he stays balanced and has a slight sink and drive to his motion.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot and does a nice job of keeping the same arm speed on pitches.  He featured an 81 MPH fastball along with a 63 MPH curve and 64 MPH change.  

Sonjay Soloman, RHP/OF, Boulder High School, (2018)
Allowed 2 hits in 5 innings in his start for Thunder Academy vs Slammers
A 6-foot-3, 185-pound right hand pitcher with a quick arm and good extension out front on delivery.  He throws from a balanced stance and land in-line with the plate.  Quick arm action from a high ¾ arm slot produced an 82 MPH fastball with good command of the zone.  He added a 65 MPH curve with sharp 11/5 break.  His show case finished with a 69MPH curve that had late downward movement.  Identified with the best breaking ball at the UCI. 

Riley Cornelio, RHP/SS, Pine Creek High School (2019)
Collected 2 RBI and the save for Team Colorado against Slammers
A 6-foot-2, 160-pound right hand hitter who ran a 4.5 home to first.   At the plate he hits from a wide balanced stance.  He has a short stride and good weight transfer through the zone.  Quick hands helped produce an 86 MPH exit velocity.  On the mound stand tall and then gets compact during his motion.  He lands slightly closed and throws across his body.  He gets good extension out front on his fastball, which registered at 85 MPH with good command of the plate.  He added a 68 MPH curve with sweeping 10/4 break and a 74 MPH change.   In the field he shows smooth actions and quick feet to the ball.  He works well on balls to the backhand side.  He featured an 82 MPH arm with accuracy. Identified as the best two way player and most projectable 2019 player at the UCI. 

Jeremy Onken, RHP/OF, Pine Creek High School (2018)
Went 5 innings giving up one run and struck out 6.  At the plate he singled, scored a run and Collected 1 RBI. In the field he made a diving play in right field to end the game. 
A 6-foot-2, 190-pound right hand hitter who ran a 4.53 home to first.  At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with a slight bat wrap on his load.  He fires his hands and hips through the zone and registered an 88 MPH exit velocity.  He shows good power to the pull side.  In the field he is quick to the ball with a quick release.  He showcased an 86 MPH arm from the outfield.  On the mound he rounded out a very good day.  He is a sink and drive pitcher and lands in-line with home plate.  He delivers over the top and showcased an 84 MPH fastball with good command of the inside part of the plate.  He added a 73 MPH curve with sharp 11/5 break and a 75 MPH change that stayed down in the zone.

Brett Newman, C/RHP, Highlands Ranch High School (2017)
Went 5 innings giving up 3 hits and 2 runs in his start against Team Colorado
6-foot-1, 165-pound right hand hitting catcher/right-hand pitcher. Tall frame behind the plate with good hands for framing. Arm is long out of the glove with accuracy to second base. Pop time was 2.08.  At the plate he is balanced with his hands high in the zone.  He has a slight load to the back side and hands drop on the swing. He shows good weight transfer and hits off a firm front side. Exit velocity was 83 MPH off the tee. Ran a 7.5 60. 

Matt Sims, C, Weld Central High School (2017)
who went 1 for 3 with 1 RBI for Slammers Fiscus against UA Prime
A 5-foot-7, 180-pound right-hand hitting catcher/outfielder who showed well at the Fall Prospect ID.  He displayed a quiet body and soft hands while receiving pitches and put his throws on the bag.  His pop-times were 2.26-2.31.  From the outfield he moves well on balls to his glove side and does a nice job of getting behind the ball.  His arm velocity was 70 MPH.  At the plate he hits from an open stance with a high leg kick to bring him square.  He shows good leg drive through the zone, which produced an 83 MPH exit velocity.  He ran a 7.56 60.

Billy Moreland, SS/RHP, Heritage High School (2016)
2 hits in the Quarter Final game at Metro State including a 3 run homerun against AZ Scout Team Red
A 6-foot-0, 175-pound right hand hitting SS/RHP who ran a 7.18 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride and quick hand load on the pitch.  Hands drop slightly and swing path is uphill.  Shows good power to the pull side.  Good lower half rotation creates a 91 MPH exit velocity.  He is smooth in the field with good feet and shoulders.  He stays square through the ball and has a quick transfer.  Throws from an over the top slot at 85 MPH with good accuracy.   

Hunter Parker, RHP/OF, Eaglecrest High School (2017)
Went 2-3 with 1 triple and 3 RBI for Lightning Blue against ThunderRidge
A 6-foot-0, 160-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 7.31 60.  Balanced at the plate with a toe tap for timing.  Shows good weight transfer on the swing and a level path to the ball.  Good extension out front produced an 84 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well on the ball and attacks forward.  Delivers from an over the top arm angle and showcased an 85 MPH arm.  On the mound he crouches on his delivery and lands in-line with the plate.  Delivers from over the top with good extension out front.  He showcased an 83 MPH fastball with good command away.  He added a 71 MPH 11/5 curve and 71 MPH change. 

Jake Pekol, RHP/3B, Legend High School (2016)
Went 6.1 innings allowing 3 hits, 1 run and struck out 4 in the Semi-Final Game against KHAOS Gold
A 6-foot-2, 190-pound, two way player who hits from a balanced stance on the right side.  A short stride and small hand load has him in good launch position.  His exit velocity was 84 MPH off the pitch and a slight upward swing path produced balls with good carry to the gaps.  In the field he shows good feet at third base, cuts the ball off in the hole well and had a 78 MPH arm velocity.  On the mound, he stays in line with the plate and throws off a stiff front side.  He showed good command of both sides of the plate and displayed a fastball that was 80-82 MPH.  He also threw a 66-69 MPH curve that had good late movement.  He ran a 7.42 60.  

Tanner Johnson, OF/RHP Chatfield High School (2016)
Went 7 innings giving up 3 hits, 0 runs and struck out 7 for KHAOS Gold vs AZ Scout Team Red
A 6-foot-1, 160-pound right hand hitting outfielder/RHP who ran a 6.91 60.  Balanced at the plate with a short stride on the pitch.  Hands load slightly back and drop on the pitch.  He shows good lower leg drive and showcased an 86 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he covers good ground and is solid through the ball.  He has a quick transfer and delivers an accurate 87 MPH ball.  He was identified as most athletic as this event.

 

Bailey Collins, OF/1B, Dakota Ridge High School (2016)
Collected 4 hits, including a 3 run home run and 2 doubles.  He came in and pitched two innings of scoreless relief for Slammers Holzmer vs Cherokee Trial
A 5-foot-11, 180-pound left hand hitting outfielder who ran a 7.18 60.  Balanced at the plate with a high leg kick and load back.  Hands drop slightly creating an uphill path through the zone.  Had a 91 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he moves well on the ball and shows a quick high ¾ release.  He has smooth actions fielding through ground balls.  He showcased a 78 MPH arm with accuracy.  He was identified with the best hitting approach 2016 for this event.

Andrew Coverly, OF/RHP, Grandview High School (2016)
2-3 with 2 RBI and a double and a 1 pitch save in Semi-Final game at Metro against KHAOS Gold
6-foot-1, 187-pound, OF/RHP impressed with his overall athleticism at the Unsigned Senior Games.  At the plate he hits from a wide balanced stance.  An upward swing plane produced balls with good carry during BP.  Good leg drive through the zone produced an exit velocity of 92 MPH off the pitch.  In the Outfield he moved well on balls left and right and displayed a strong 86 MPH accurate arm.  On the mound he drops down and throws from a ¾ to side arm angle.  A smooth delivery and good arm speed on all pitches produced an 80-83 MPH fastball and 73-75 curve that moved sharp away from the right handed hitters.

Quincy Ulrich, RHP/OF, ThunderRidge High School (2017)
Went 2 for 2 with a home run and 3 RBI for Slammers against Thunder Academy
A 6-foot-2, 175-pound right hand hitting OF/RHP who ran a 7.10 60.  At the plate he stand tall and balanced.  Lift and place stride to start his swing with aggressive weight transfer.  He shows good extension through the ball with a slight uphill swing path.  He registered an 83 MPH exit velocity and showed good ability to get around on the inside pitch.  On the mound he stays compact in his motion.  He drives hard to the plate and stay in-line through the delivery.  He showed good command of all three pitches.  He was slated to start the next day so velocity was down, but control and mechanics were there.  Fastball was 80 MPH this day with a 62-64 MPH 11/5 curve and a 68-69 MPH change. 

Thomas Nagel, 3B/RHP, Dakota Ridge High School (2016)
Went 3 for 3 including a double and triple and 2 RBI for Slammers
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed third baseman/right-handed pitcher/right-handed outfielder.  Defensively, has a good frame for third base, throwing 81 mph across the diamond from short, over the top arm action with accuracy. On the mound, utilizes long, loose, high ¾ arm slot.  Easy effort, slow tempo, tall-and-fall type delivery produces 78-80 mph fastballs from the windup and stretch.  Slows arm a bit on 68-69 mph breaking ball with 12/6 shape that was also thrown for strikes.  Nagel is starting to develop into his body and is an interesting follow over the next two years, especially if his velocity takes a jump into the mid to upper 80’s. with lanky, athletic frame.  Hits from a tall, balance set-up, hands wrap back, utilizes a short stride with leg kick. Produces an inside out swing with gap-gap power. Shows good bat speed that produces 79 mph exit velocity.  

Travis Marr, RHP, Regis Jesuit High School (2016)
Threw 7 innings touching 92 MPH ( fastball averaged 88) and struck out 11 to the take the tough loss for Slammers Holzmer vs Team Colorado. 
Marr had a good fall, flashing a fastball that touched the low 90s, but sat 87-89 in Jupiter. He stands at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and works from a 3/4 arm slot. He pitches aggressively and works both sides of the plate well. His fastball has arm-side run. His curveball has tight, late break and his changeup is deceiving has he maintains the same arm action as his fastball.
