Chatfield defeats Dakota Ridge

Littleton - The 5A Jeffco League has been a marry-go round of sorts in 2017 with every team seeming to get a turn to ten-run another team. The league is pretty consistent from top to bottom with teams hovering around .500, and in the standings 7 of the 8 teams have a league record of either 4-3 or 3-4. The Chargers on Tuesday took one step towards helping secure a Jeffco League title by beating the Eagles on their own turf 12-1 in a game that only took an hour and twenty five minutes.

On the mound for the Eagles has bee the steady senior, RHP Carter Akerfelds (Iowa Western), who last outing shutout out the Columbine Rebels 10-0. The Chargers countered with junior RHP Blake Dickman.

The game started off good for Akerfelds, getting the first two quick outs in the first, but then it would turn into a game he will be sure to want to forget. Akerfelds would next walk senior SS Jack Winkler (University of San Fransisco), then immediately give up a deep homerun to Dickman. After another walk to senior Alex Roach, Akerfelds would give up consecutive singles to juniors Mathew Moon and William Russum, and Chatfield would leave the inning with a 3-0 lead.

The Eagles would get a steady diet of fastball for strikes inside and out from Dickman, mixing in a good curveball that would stymie their offense.

In the top of the 3rd, Akerfelds would give up another 2-run homerun to Moon to take a 5-0 lead, but then the big blow of the game came in the top of the 4th when Winkler would hit a towering shot 3-run home run to left center taking the air out of the Eagles sails, giving the Chargers an 8-0 lead. By the end of the inning the Chargers would lead 10-0.

Dickman would go on to pitch a complete game giving up only 4 hits, 1 walk while striking out 6 to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Chatfield with the win improves to 8-7 on the season, and 5-2 in league. Next up for the Chargers will be a non-league game at Cherokee Trail on 4-28-17. The loss drops the Eagles to 8-8, and 4-3 in league. The Eagles next play in the end of the year Jeffco League tournament starting on 5-4-17.
