Colorado Draft Preview

The 2014 Major League Draft takes place June 5-7. It will begin Thursday evening at 7 p.m. EST with the first day consisting of the first two rounds and competitive balance rounds. The third through 10th rounds will take place on Friday and Rounds 11-40 will happen Saturday. The final two days will start at 1 p.m. EST. In advance of the draft, Prep Baseball Report is posting a summary of each state in the coverage area with scouting reports on the top high school draft prospects.
When it comes to high school prospects in Colorado, pitching is typically a strength. The state has produced the likes of Roy Halladay, Brad Lidge, Brandon McCarthy and Hall of Famer Goose Gossage, not to mention younger prospects like the Orioles’ Kevin Gausmann, Arizona State’s Ryan Burr and the Cardinals’ Marco Gonzales. The 2014 class falls into that line with a handful of projectable arms.
1. David Peterson, LHP, Regis Jesuit HS, CO
Tall and projectable at 6-foot-6, 230 pounds, Peterson is one of the top high school southpaws in the country. Playing for one of Colorado’s top teams, Peterson was a priority target to see at the National High School Invitational in March. However, Peterson suffered a broken leg before the season started and was sidelined until April. He returned to the mound, closing games as he worked his way back to full strength. By the end of the season, he was able to pitch a full game and held his velocity, even reaching back to find a tick more in pressure situations.
