Colorado Fall Prospect Games Catcher Analysis

The Fall Prospect Games took place on September 22nd at Regis University.  Prospects were on hand for the one day event that included individual evaluations and a game.  Players from the 2019-2022 classes were on hand and did not disappoint during this event.

Over the next week, we will break down individual performances from the Fall Prospect games.  We begin our look at the catching position.


Fall Prospect Games Catcher Analysis

 

Micah Barkenhagen C / OF / Douglas County, CO / 2020

A 6-foot, 165-pound right hand hitting C/OF who showcased a 1.95-2.00 pop-time.  At the plate he is balanced with a big leg trigger on the pitch.  Lower have drives hard through the zone and hands create good whip on the swing.  Exit velocity was 90 mph. Behind the plate he showed soft hands and quick actions while blocking.  Arm is short and over the top and was 77 mph with accuracy.

 

 

 

Nathan Bennick C / 1B / Arapahoe High School, CO / 2020

6-foot-3, 165-pound right hand hitting C/1B who had a 2.04-2.10 pop-time.  At the plate he stands open with a double tap stride to come square.  Swing is long and uphill.  Strong lower leg drive and good extension at contact.  Exit velocity was 78 mph.  Solid catcher behind the plate, quick glove and hands on pitches in the dirt.  Sets up low in the zone and frames well.  Arm was 64 mph.

 

 

 

Tony Castonguay C / 3B / Grandview , CO / 2020

An athletic, 5-foot-11, 180-pound switch hitting C/3B who ran a 7.21 60.  Slightly open on the right side with an aggressive swing an weight transfer.  Swing path is slightly uphill with good extension at contact.  Exit velocity was 87 mph from the right side.  The left side swing is catching up to the right.  Slightly open with a big leg kick on the pitch.  Strong lower half with a an uphill swing path.  Ball shows good carry to the gaps.  Defensively, he shows solid fundamentals at 3rd base.  Quick feet square him up to the bag and he has a quick glove to hand transfer.  Arm was 84 mph across the diamond.  Behind the plate he shows good athletic actions while blocking balls and throwing down.  Arm is short and accurate and he had a showcase best 1.85 pop-time.

 

 

 

Noah Frampton C / RHP / Mountain Range, CO / 2021

6-foot-3, 225-pound right hand hitting C/RHP.  Right-handed hitter, balanced stance, short stride, average balance. Path is long and level, pull side approach, 78 mph exit velocity from the tee. Pop times ranged 2.15-2.18, firm over the top arm action, played 67 mph out of the crouch. Tall and fall motion on the mound.  Arm is short behind his head with good extension out front.  Will benefit from a stronger lower leg drive.  Fastball was straight at 71 mph.  He added a 59-61 mph curve with sweeping 11/5 break.

 

 

 

Ty Kennedy SS / C / Legend, CO / 2022

5-foot-11,150-pound right hand hitting C/SS who ran a 7.29 60. Well above average defender, natural actions, soft hands and blocker, quick feet and exchange. 1.97-2.05 pop times. Arm played short and over the top, 82 mph out of the crouch. Right-handed hitter, slightly open stance, short stride, solid balance. Occasional hard contact, worked on a line to both gaps, in rhythm, 84 mph exit velocity from the tee.  Shows quick feet in the field with a fast glove to hand transfer.  Arm is short and accurate to the bag.

 

 

 

Jacob Lynch C / OF / Valor Christian, CO / 2021

5-foot-8, 143-pound right hand hitting C/OF who ran a 7.45 60. Narrow stance at the plate with a big leg kick on the pitch.  Strong lower leg drive through the zone.  Hands show good whip and extension at contact.  Ball travels well to the left center gap.  Exit velocity was 83 mph from the tee.  Solid fundamentals in the outfield, comes through the baseball and delivers from a ¾ arm slot.  Arm from the outfield was accurate and played at 67 mph.  Behind the plate with is quiet on the pitch and showed good instincts on balls in the dirt.  Average glove to hand transfer, arm is short and high ¾.  Arm was 65 mph from the crouch with a 2.15-2.22 pop time.

 

 

 

Tony Sus C / OF / Grandview, CO / 2020

6-foot, 150-pound right hand hitting C/3B who ran a 7.40 60. Balanced stance at the plate.  Unique right foot then left foot sequence on the pitch.  Swing path is level through the zone and weight spins on contact.  Showed good bat control to all fields.  Exit Velocity was 76 mph from the tee. Behind the plate he was solid.  Showed good fundamentals and quick actions while blocking.  Arm is from a high ¾ slot and pop times were 2.05-2.11.  In the field he showed smooth actions and attacks the ball.  Arm is long from a ¾ slot with a good glove to hand transfer.  Arm played at 74 mph with accuracy.
