Colorado Fall Prospect Games: Catchers Analysis

The other day we began our positional analysis of each position from the Colorado Prospect Games starting with the outfielders and corners. Today we cover the catchers. Players are listed in alphabetical order:

Owen Best, C/1B, Regis Jesuit, 2020
5-foot-10, 185 pounds, Bats left throws right. Stands tall at plate. Has some rhythm at the plate. Hands load down then up. Leg kick. Uphill swing. Has some power potential. Gets good extension through the ball and good lower half. Pull power. Generated a 82 mph exit velo off the tee. Soft hands while framing. Big body behind plate. Intriguing left-handed hitting catching prospect. Pop-times were 2.10-2.12 off off the pitcher in between innings. 72 mph down to 2nd. Ran a 8.8 60 that should go down as he grows into body. 

Tyler Boggs, C/3B, Fruita Monument, 2018
5-foot-11, 160 pounds. Bats and throws right. Wide balanced stance at the plate. Short stride. Loads straight back. Level swing and good extension through the zone. Up the middle line drive hitter. Good exit velocity of 86 mph off the tee. Very little movement when framing. Pop-times were 2.10-2.13 in between innings off a pitcher. Threw 78 mph down to 2nd. Showcases a strong arm behind the plate. Ran a 7.28 60 time. Athletic catcher. Also came away impressed with defensive play at 3rd. 

Wilson Chatham, C/1B, Boulder, 2018
6-foot, 170 pounds. Bats and throws right. Slightly open stance at plate, closes down with leg kick. Generates good bat whip through zone and good extension. Gets most out of his swing. Over rotates a little on lower half. Has solid pull power. 86 mph exit velo off the tee. Solid fundamentals behind plate. Frames and blocks well. Pop-time was 1.98 to 2.05 off pitcher in between innings. Arm velo down to 2nd was 74 mph. Ran a 7.64 60 time. Solid catching prospect. 

Jun Choi, C/3B, Cherry Creek, 2018
5-foot-11, 185 pounds. Bats and throws right. Really like his approach at plate. Balanced stance with good bat speed through extension.  Lower body works well with upper body in swing. Gap to gap power. During games showed a lot of patience at plate, and would foul off balls until got a pitch to handle (Double with bases loaded). 91 mph exit velocity off a tee. Frames well and is comfortable receiving. Has slight delay in throwing motion that could improve 2.25 pop-time if disappears. Ran a 7.87 60 time. 

Braden Dedrick, C/OF, Pine Creek, 2019

5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Bats and throws right. Has a slight crouch in his stance. Hands are a little low in load. Short stride. Swing is slightly uphill but extends through the ball well. Does goes gap to gap. Registered a 81 mph exit velo off a tee. Showed good arm strength at 75 mph down to 2nd. Of a pitcher between innings was 2.09-2.11 with pop-time. Could improve easily if the slight delay in arm action goes away. Ran a 7.43 60 time. 

Craig Kenny, C/3B, Regis Jesuit, 2020
5-foot-9, 160 pounds. Bats and throws right. Still growing into his body. Has long arms and is all legs right now. Has a balanced stance at the plate. Loads hands down, with slightly uphill swing. Gap to gap power, and has good extension through the ball. Lower half works well. Registered a 80 mph exit velo off of tee. Had a good weekend hitting at the plate. Receives well, and was challenged at his age catching 90 plus fastballs during event. Pop-time was 2.10 - 2.16 off pitcher in between innings . Catching velo was 68. Ran a 8.4 60 time. 

Blake Labuda, C/2B, Legacy, 2019
5-foot-8, 135 pounds. Bats and throws right. Slightly opened stance with slight crouch. Short stride, hand load is good with some rhythm. Swing slightly uphill. Line drive power up the middle. Solid contact in batting practice round. Registered a 77 mph exit velo off the tee. Shows nice soft hands when receiving. Pop-time was 2.03-2.06 off pitcher in between innings. Arm strength was 73 mph down to 2nd. Ran a 7.4 60. 

Denver Matlock, C/1B, Pine Creek, 2018
5-foot-11, 170 pounds. Bats and throws right. Has a wide balanced stance. No stride. Load is minimal. Swing path is short and keeps hands inside of the ball. Line drives up the middle. Registered a 79 mph exit velo off the tee. Solid receiving skills. 2.22 - 2.25 pop time off pitcher in between innings. Had him at 2.10 off coach last August. 69 mph arm strength down to 2nd. Ran a 8.28 60 time. 

Daniel Moore, C/3B, Horizon, 2017
6-foot-2, 195 pounds. Bats and throws right. Opened, balance stance at the plate which is closed down with short stride. Good bat speed through zone which is short and quick to ball. Line drive hitter with level swing through zone. 92 mph exit velocity off the tee which was one of the best at event. Effortless when receiving and minimal movement. Can steal strikes. 2.03 pop-time down to 2nd but a very strong arm at 83 mph. Ran a 7.50 60 time. Raw athletic catcher with a lot of room to improve on strong skill set. 

Nate Roach, C/SS, Steamboat Springs, 2018

6-foot, 165 pounds. Bats and throws right. Slightly opened stance that closes down on slight leg kick. Some extra movement in load which is straight back and is on time to hit. Hands drop to ball at contact that produces line-drives up the middle with pull tendencies. 82 mph exit velocity off a tee.  Does a good job beating the ball and receiving out front. Blocks well. Quick release and strong arm aides to 2.07 pop-time off pitcher. Ran a 7.90 60. 

Mason Speirs, C/3B, Broomfield, 2017 

5-foot-11, 202 pounds. Bats and throws right.  Currently one of the top uncommitted catchers in the state. Hands are loose in load and swing path is short to the ball with good bat speed. Goes gap to gap. Generated a 90 mph exit velo off a tee, and there is more room to improve if lower half gets a little more involved. Was the best defensive catcher at event. Made framing and blocking look easy, and was 1.83 off pitcher in between innings down to 2nd. 82 mph down to 2nd. Back picked a runner off 1st from knees during games. Solid catching prospect.
