Colorado Top Prospect Games: Middle Infield Analysis

The Colorado Top Prospect Games took place on Saturday August 16th and Sunday August 17th, at Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, CO. This year’s event featured several talented, uncommitted players in Colorado’s 2015 through 2018 classes. We recently highlighted the Top Catching Prospects, Third Base Prospects, First Base Prospects, and Outfield Prospects at the event. In our next positional analysis we will take a look at the top middle infielders.Mountain Vista's and Grand Canyon University commit Marc Mumper takes home top honors thanks to his athletic middle infield actions and arm strength across the diamond, which he also showcased on the mound. Columbine's Tommy Gillman showed off his versatility playing 5 positions, possessing solid baseball actions and hit very well. Dakota Ridge's Thomas Sautel impressed with his physicality both at the plate and in the field.

Here’s a look at the top middle infield prospects at this year’s Colorado Top Prospect Games:

Top Middle Infield Prospects

1. Marc Mumper, MIF/RHP, Mountain Vista, 2015 (Grand Canyon University Commit)
5-foot-10, 155-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder/right-handed pitcher with good swagger impressed hitting from a balanced athletic setup, hands load back smooth with a short strided leg kick. Bat speed is fast with a short path and level extension which creates line-drive, gap to gap power and produced an 89 mph exit velocity off a tee (Top speed in the games) Showcased a short, loose, athletic, arm action in the middle infield with soft hands and quick footwork fielding the baseball. Threw 84 mph across the diamond and ran an impressive 6.62 60. On the mound, utilized the same quick, short, loose, arm action with a 85-86 mph fastball. Threw 74-76 mph changeup for strikes down in the zone. Had a late breaking slider from a lower arm angle was thrown for strikes consistently and sat at 74-76 mph. Collected multiple hits during the games.

2.Tommy Gillman, MIF, C, OF, P, Columbine, 2016
5-foot-10, 170-pound switch hitting middle infielder impressed showing his versatility playing 5 positions(SS, 2B, RF, LF, P). Gillman shows swagger hitting from a balanced athletic stance from both sides. Has a smooth load with short strided leg kick. Produces a level path with good extension creating line drive power generating a 82 mph exit velocity off the tee from the left side, and 79 mph exit velocity from the right side. From left side showed the ability to have opposite field power. Threw 84 mph across the diamond from short, arm action with accuracy, playing through the baseball with quick, clean middle infield actions. On the mound, utilized the same quick, short, loose, arm action flashing a 74-76 mph fastball. Threw 68-70 mph changeup for strikes down in the zone. From the catching position had a 2.03 pop-time. Gillman also ran a 6.80 60 yard dash. Collected multiple hits during the games. Has all the tools and is a player to follow next two years.

3.Thomas Sautel, SS, Dakota Ridge, 2015
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting impressed with strong build and good approach at plate. Defensively, threw 74 mph across the diamond from short, showcasing good hands and accuracy while playing through the baseball. Hits from a tall stance with minimal load, producing short uphill bat path with extension and 86 mph exit velocity off tee. Ball jumps off bat with gap to gap power with carry. During the games went 1-2 with RBI double the first day, and 1-1 with Sac Fly the second day. Ran a 7.56 60.

Jared Chick, MIF, Roosevelt High School, 2016
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting MIF, hits from a tall setup with a short stride stride combined with a leg kick, hands move back during load producing 75 mph exit velocity off the tee. Has a good approach at the plate with a level swing producing gap to gap power. Defensively, threw 75 mph across the diamond with some accuracy from short, high arm slot. Showcased soft hands and played through the baseball. Ran an impressive 6.75 60, and was 4.25 from home to first. Kinda of a sleeper in our state coming from small town Johnstown. Had a good day day 2 of the games going 2-2 with RBI double and a 8.62 home to second time.

Javier Garcia, MIF/OF, Pueblo West, 2015
5-foot-10, 145-pound MIF/OF hits from a slightly open stance with a smooth load back and short stride showing quick hands to the ball with a short level swing producing an exit velocity of 84 mph. Defensively, threw 72 mph across the diamond with some accuracy from short, high arm slot, and threw 79 mph from the outfield. Was the buzz of the games running a 6.3 60 which could be the fastest time in our state. His second 60 time was 6.38. Ran a 4.1 home to first time. Shows good skills to build on and needs to definitely be a player to follow due to his exceptional speed.

Mitchell Hulse, MIF, Columbine, 2016
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2B/MIF bats left from a athletic crouch setup with a no load or stride, creating a long swing with good extension producing gap to gap power with a 77 mph exit velocity off the tee. Showed good ability to turn on the inside pitch. Has a strong build. Defensively, threw right handed at 73 mph across the diamond with some accuracy from short, high arm slot. Showcased soft hands and played through the baseball. Ran a 7.25 60.

James Kester, INF/P, Regis Jesuit, 2017
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitting MIF/RHP hit from a balanced tall setup with a leg kick producing a short swing and an impressive 87 mph exit velocity. Threw 76 mph across the diamond from shortstop from a loose, high arm slot, with accuracy and carry. Ran a 7.21 60. On the mound threw 78-79 mph from loose, high slot. Threw strikes with fastball and 68-69mph 12/6 curveball. Mechanically, showed some rhythm to delivery, with level shoulders, toe pointed down at balance point, with a square, in-line towards home plate landing, but would then fall off towards first.

Tanner Lang, MIF, Columbine, 2017
5-foot-19, 160-pound athletic MIF. In the infield, threw 64 mph across the diamond from a short arm action, impressing with good hands and clean exchanges playing through the baseball. Hits from a balanced setup, with minimal load and good approach up the middle of the field. Short bat path produced several line drives from gap-to-gap with 78 mph exit velocity. Had a good weekend hitting a double and single on the first day. Also ran a 7.30 60 yard dash.

Victor Lara, MIF, Columbine, 2018
5-foot-5, 140-pound switch hitting infielder hits from a balanced setup with a short stride, getting foot down early producing uphill swing with line drives from gap-to-gap and strength to the opposite field, with 74 mph exit velocity. Threw 66 mph across the infield from short, high arm action with accuracy. Hands were average fielding the baseball with clean exchanges. Ran a 8.2 60

Ty Lightley, MIF, P, Dakota Ridge, 2016 
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting MIF/RHP hit from a balanced setup with a short stride producing a short, level swing with line drives mostly to his pull side and 80 mph exit velocity. Threw 75 mph across the diamond from shortstop from a short, high arm slot, with accuracy and carry. Showcased soft hands, playing through the baseball and impressing on back hand balls. Ran a 7.34 60 and 4.76 seconds from home to first. On the mound threw 78-79 mph from short, high slot. Threw strikes with fastball and 67-70 mph 12/6 curveball. 72-74 mph straight changeup showed occasional bottom. Mechanically, showed some rhythm to delivery, with level shoulders, toe pointed down at balance point, with a square, in-line towards home plate landing.

Ben Schecter, MIF/OF, Lakewood, 2016
5-foot-10, 140-pound is an athletic outfielder/shortstop. Throws from a long slinging arm slot with some accuracy. In the infield, threw 73  mph across the diamond from a short arm action, impressing with average hands and clean exchanges playing through the baseball. Hits from an slightly open setup, loading hands back smoothly with a good approach up the middle of the field. Level bat path produced several line drives from gap-to-gap with 78 mph exit velocity. Also ran a 7.20 60 yard dash and 4.34 from home to first. Versatile baseball player and had a lot of quality at-bats during the games. 

Jake Starkey, MIF/OF, Dakota Ridge, 2017
5-foot-6, 125-pound second baseman with above average range on balls up the middle, posses a very accurate arm to first base. Throws over the top with a short quick are, infield velocity was 71 mph. He posses soft hands on ground balls and has a great field presence. At the plate his 74 mph exit velocity produces good pop off the bat. He is a balanced hitter with a short stride which allows his hands to be quick to the ball, he has good bat control and hits well to both gaps. He ran a 7.69 60 yard dash.

Mike Vessa, MIF/OF, Lakewod, 2016
5-foot-7 145 athletic second baseman gets the most out of his size and frame. He has good range on balls both left and right and does a great job using his 6.90 60 yard dash speed to track down flyballs in the shallow outfield. He posses a a very accurate arm from second base and has quick hands when turning a double play. At the plate he looks athletic and balanced with an open stance, his short stride allows him to generate great hip drive though his swing which produces exit velocities of 80 mph. He is very comfortable hitting the ball the opposite way and posses good power to the right center ally. He uses his 4.23 home to first speed to put pressure on the defense while on base.
