Colorado Top Prospect Games: Pitcher/Position Player Analysis

On August 5th and 6th PBR Colorado hosted their 4th annual Top Prospect Games at historic Cherry Creek High School. 70 prospects from the 2019-2021 classes showed up for the two day event that featured both a pro-style workout and games each day. The other day we started with the Catchers Analysis, then Corners and Outfielders, and Middle Infielders. Yesterday we took a look at the pitcher only's and today we finish our look at the 2017 TPG with the Pitcher/Position players.

Best of the Best

Clayton Burke RHP / 3B / Mountain Vista, CO / 2019

6-foot-3, 215-pound right hand hitting RHP/1B.  At the plate he has a balanced simple set up.  He uses a slow load to his back side and a short stride to get his weight coming forward.  Hips and hands fire through the zone and produce great pull side power.  Exit velocity was 92 MPH and he hit several balls hard off the wall in the left center gap during the live round.  In the field he is solid at first base.  He moves well on balls in the hole and shows good feet while turning a double play.  Arm velocity was 82 MPH across the diamond.  On the mound he is an imposing presence.  Projectable size and arm was on display at the TPG.  His motion is mechanically sound with no wasted movements.  He gets balanced and then drives hard to the plate.  Burke worked two very quick innings at the TPG collecting 4 K’s along the way.  Lower half lands inline with the plate and he stays square through delivery.  Arm is quick and over the top.  Fastball was 89 MPH and he could put it anywhere in the zone.  Command was on point.  He added a 71 MPH curve with tight rotation and sharp 11/5 break.

 

 

 

Nate Vondy RHP / SS / Mountain View High School, CO / 2019

6-foot-0, 165-pound RHP/SS who ran a 7.20 60.  At the plate he is open with hands held high in the zone.  He uses a high leg kick to get loaded on his back side and to come square.  Hips fire through the zone and he hits off a firm front side.  Hands are quick and he turns well on the inside pitch.  Exit velocity was 86 MPH.  At short stop he carries himself well and moves well left and right.  He anticipates the ball off the bat and gets an extra step in the games.  He has soft hands and a great glove to hand transfer.  He delivers from a high ¾ arm slot and was 87 MPH across the diamond.  On the mound he gets balanced and then drives hard to the plate.  He has a fast loose arm and locates well down in the zone.  His fastball was 85 MPH with late run in on the right hand hitter.  He added a hard 75 MPH curve with sharp 11/5 break that dives out of the zone.  He finished with a 73 MPH change with late sink.  He worked two very effective innings at the TPG.

 

 

 

Kyle Thompson RHP / OF / Pine Creek, CO / 2019

6-foot-0, 185-pound RHP/OF who ran a 7.40 60.  At the plate he stands balanced with a wide set up.  A small stride starts his weight forward and he drives hard through the zone.  Swing path us uphill and his ball has good carry.  Hands are quick and the bat whips through the zone.  Exit velocity was 89 MPH.  In the field he moves well to the ball.  He anticipates and cuts the ball in the gap off.  He has athletic feet which help get him in throwing position and he delivers from an over the top arm slot.  Arm velocity was 85 MPH with several throws right on the bag.  On the mound he has a very rhythmic motion and delivery.  He uses a high leg kick and then sinks and drives to the plate.  Lower half lands in-line with home plate and his arm is over the top.  Delivery mirrors itself pitch after pitch.  Fastball was 84 MPH and he moves it well all around the zone.  Fastball has late run inside on the hitter.  He added a 73 MPH curve with sharp 11/5 break.

 

 

 

Calvin Hunt RHP / 3B / Ralston Valley, CO / 2019

6-foot-3, 170-pound right hand hitting RHP/3B.  In the field he plays a solid first base.  He shows good instincts and placement.  He has athletic feet and gets into proper throwing position and delivers an accurate 84 MPH ball across the diamond.  On the mound he works two very efficient innings at the TPG.  He uses a small rocker step to get to a high balanced position and then sinks and drive to the plate.  His landing is in-line with the plate and he throws off two feet.  Arm slot is high ¾ and his arm is loose through delivery.  Fastball was consistent at 83 MPH and he showed good command and placement in the zone.  He mixed in two off speed pitches to keep hitters off balance.  His curve was 71 MPH with sharp 11/5 break.  He also showcased a 73 MPH change with late sink in the zone.  

 

 

 

Carson Brown RHP / OF / Rock Canyon High School, CO / 2020

5-foot-9, 135-pound right hand hitting RHP/OF who rana 7.39 60.  At the plate he starts open with a high leg kick to come square.  He uses a long load of the hands to explode back through the zone.  Swing path is uphill and hands are quick through the zone.  Exit velocity was 89 MPH.  In the field he moves well, he showed good athletic actions and instinct during the game to cut several balls off.  Arm velocity was 81 MPH.  On the mound his motion is simple and effective.  From balance he sinks and drives hard to the plate.  Arm is over the top and arm speed stays up on all pitches.  Fastball was 83 MPH with good command in on the hitter.  He added a 64 MPH slider with good back door action to the right hand hitter.  His two pitch mix was very effective at the TPG.

 

 

 

Best of the Rest

Kailer Chance RHP / OF / ThunderRidge, CO / 2019

6-foot-3, 158-pound right hand hitting RHP/OF.  At the plate he stands tall and balanced.  He loads early and weight slides through the zone on contact.  Swing path is uphill and his ball has good carry to it.  Exit velocity was 76 MPH.  In the field he uses his long stride to cover good ground.  He moves well to the glove side and delivers an accurate 73 MPH ball from an over the top arm slot.  On the mound he uses his size to gain ground on the plate during the delivery.  From balance, he falls to the plate and shows good extension out front.  Arm is over the top and stays hidden behind his body for much of his motion.  Fastball was 75 MPH with good location down in the zone.  He added a 65 MPH slider that would start in the middle of the plate with sharp break away from the hitter.

 

 

 

 

 

Cole Greer RHP / OF / Douglas County, CO / 2020

6-foot-1, 165-pound right hand hitting RHP/OF.  At the plate he starts open with a long stride to come square.  His load is smooth to the back side and weight transfer is explosive on the swing.  Swing path is level and hands whip through the zone.  Exit velocity was 87 MPH.  On the mound his motion is quick and mechanically sound.  From balance he drives hard to the plate.  He has a quick loose arm and delivers from an over the top arm slot.  Fastball was 81 MPH with good location down in the zone.  He used two off-speed pitches to make his fastball jump more.  Curveball was 73 MPH with sharp 11/5 break and he added a 73 MPH change with late sink in the zone.

 

 

 

 

 

Kiernan Hagan 3B / RHP / Chaparral, CO / 2019

6-foot-0, 155-pound right hand hitting RHP/3B.  At the plate he is balanced and uses a long stride on the pitch for timing.  Weight slides through the zone and he gets good extension at contact.  Swing path is slightly uphill and he hits off a firm front side.  Exit velocity was 79 MPH.  In the field he plays a solid third base.  He shows good instincts and anticipation.  He moves well to his glove side and has a quick glove to hand transfer.  Arm velocity was 74 MPH across the diamond.  On the mound he uses a high leg kick and from balance he sinks and drives hard to the plate.  He lands in-line with the plate and delivers from an over the top arm slot.  Fastball was 75 MPH with good command away.  He also added a 60 MPH curve with sweeping 11/5 break. 

 

 

 

 

 

Jack Harris SS / RHP / Lewis Palmer, CO / 2020

6-foot-2, 150-pound right hand hitting RHP/SS.  At the plate he has a narrow open stance.  He uses a high leg kick and strong load to his back side to explode through the pitch.  Swing has a lot of moving parts.  Swing path is uphill and he finished high and on his back side.  Exit velocity was 91 MPH.  In the field he anticipates well and does a nice job of rounding the ball.  Transfer from his glove to hand is quick and he delivers from a high ¾ arm slot.  Arm velocity was 73 MPH.  On the mound he has a traditional motion and good balance point.  Weight slides forward on the delivery and he lands slightly open on the pitch.  Follow through takes him to the first base side.  He delivers from a high ¾ arm slot and his fastball was 74 MPH with good location in the zone.  He added a 63 MPH curve with sweeping 11/5 break across the zone.  

 

 

 

 

 

Collin Kringlen RHP / 1B / Holy Family, CO / 2019

6-foot-4, 175-pound left hand hitting RHP/1B.  At the plate he has a big presence.  He hits from a balanced position with a lift and place stride for timing.  He has explosive movements with his hips and hands.  Swing path is uphill and his ball has good carry.  Exit velocity was 85 MPH for the TPG.  In the field he plays first base well.  He uses good positioning and athletic actions around the bag.  He showed soft hands and a quick transfer on throws to second.  Arm velocity was 80 MPH.  On the mound he is smooth in his wind up and delivery to the plate.  He uses a high balance and falls to the plate.  Lower half stays in-line and and a long stride closes distance on the plate.  He throws from an over the top arm slot and hides the ball well.  Fastball was 80 MPH but seemed a touch quicker with an effective 67 MPH curve with sharp 11/5 break.  Fastball was located well in two innings of work at the TPG.
