Colorado unsigned senior watch

As the calendar prepares to flip to 2022, we're going to begin highlighting four unsigned seniors at a time. We had several showcases this past year focusing on upperclassmen and it allowed us to see just how many college ready players are left out there in the state.

Our first unsigned senior watch focuses on four players who impressed our staff this past year, including one of the top unsigned arms and position players.

Grayson Headrick OF / SS / Columbine, CO / 2022

The Columbine OF/SS is one of the top uncommitted seniors in Colorado and stood out this summer with his swing and speed. Headrick, a right-handed hitter, has a smooth swing and generates hard contact to the pullside with an exit velocity of 95. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound outfielder runs a 4.04 down the line and his speed plays on the defensive side where his arm gets up to 77. His game should continue to elevate across the board as he matures.

Tyler Mejia LHP / 1B / Mountain Vista, CO / 2022

We saw Mejia back in August for the first time following his Tommy John Surgery. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound left-hander still looks the part with a fastball that sits 84-86, topping out at 86.8. There’s good feel for a curveball at 70-72 and a plus pitch with his 72 mph changeup. There’s lots to like in Mejia’s arsenal and there’s still plenty of room for him to grow and develop. Easily one of the most exciting uncommitted arms in Colorado.

Luke Byler 3B / 1B / Lutheran , CO / 2022

Byler was a major standout during our 5280 Showcase in early November. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound corner infielder has present strength which is evident throughout his rounds of BP. He has explosive hands and great rotational acceleration, leading to exit velocities of 96.9 mph. Byler moves well side to side and is 84 mph across the diamond. There’s a lot to like in Byler’s game and he would be a nice late addition for college programs.

Gavin Shary SS / OF / Denver North, CO / 2022

We last saw Shary in August at the Colorado Top Prospects Games in August and he stood out with a good overall day. He started by running a 6.69 60-yard dash and followed it up with some good swings from the right-side. It’s a gap-to-gap, line drive approach right now but the power will come as he fills out his 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame. The arm and athleticism are strong enough to stick at short but he’ll have no issues making an adjustment to the outfield.
