Colorado Winter Prospect ID: Underclass Outfield Analysis

The PBR Colorado Winter Prospect I.D. took place on Sunday, December 15th at The Edge Sports Center in Fort Collins, CO. Over 50 prospects from the 2020-2024 classes we in attendance. 

We began our positional analysis yesterday by taking a look at all catchers in attendance. Today, we continue that coverage with analysis on the underclass outfielders. 

Conner Abbott, Rifle, 2023
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 5'10" 150 Raw 2023 with strength potential
Run: 7.51
Hit: RHH Slightly closed stance to open stride. Weight distribution goes to front on stride. Uses rotation as momentum through the ball. Hands start high with extension back and down to load. Bat head/ Barrel Flattens. Some arm angle extension on load. Demonstrated some strength with tendency to pull side. Short to Short through ball. Exit Velo: 74
Power: See single/double potential to pull side.
Arm: OF Velo: 65 Arm action was limited with back side arc. Would benefit from long toss program and better throwing foundation
Defense: OF Fielded ball on side. Actions will benefit with added strength and quickness. Foundation of throws drifted to glove side

Josh Cluff, Elizabeth, 2022

Positional Profile: OF/2B
Body: 5'4' 114 Good Progression of added Strength in Videos
Run: 8.0
Hit: RHH Simple stride with tendency to open front side. Creates a toe tap as Timing. Stays to the rear side. Load and timing with hands are repeatable with simple small movements. Creates balance with an upward lift and path through the zone. Rotational hitter with middle of field/pull side tendency. Exit VELO: 66
Power: See Josh as a Line Drive Singles and Doubles Hitter
Arm: OF VELO: 60 Will benefit by added strength and balanced throwing position. Showed good catch to release
Defense: OF Good Hand/Eye in OF, fielded ball in front of body with quick actions.

Braeden Lock, Valor Christian, 2022

Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 6’3”  217
Run: 8.06
Hit: RHH  Spread out stance, sway to stacked load.  Stride foot is a toe tap to launch. Hands and arm angles quiet with bat head leveled.  Launch has slight front side tilt. Rear Side has aggressive rotation and linear movement through ball. Barrel enters zone early, but extends with quickness and strength through it.   Middle of field to slight pull approach. Exit Velo:92 Barreled up in BP
Power: Yes!  Potential to develop.  Will benefit with refined balance
Arm: OF Velo:  79 Uses Strength to generate Velo..very little arc on backside, more push.  Good extension, demonstrated accuracy
Defense: Good hand/eye to ball with glove.  Let ball travel to him.

Mason Macias, Heritage, 2022

 Positional Profile: OF/C
Body: 5’9”  150
Run: 7.65
Hit: RHH  Vert Solid base with slight shift for load.  Uses a toe tap slide as stride. Consistent and is on time. At Launch, weight is 50/50 and uses rear side acceleration.  Load with hands is simple, arm angles are maintained and bat head in great position. Quick hands to ball, repeatable line drive path to the ball.  Middle of the field results. Finish was short with consistent balance On time often. Exit Velo: 82
Power: Mason may demonstrate power later in career, but see him as a Gap to Gap doubles/Hustle hitter
Arm: OF: 80 Catcher: VELO: 72  Pop: 2.22
Defense:  Really good actions in OF.  Great footwork and ease to ball. Positioned to throw every time and a great catch to release quickness.  Catcher: Showed great quickness and potential behind plate. Skill set will improve as he matures. Really good baseball versatility

Colin Mackenzie, Mullen, 2023

Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 5’8”  135
Run: 7.91
Hit: RHH  Simple Base with slight load to back side and minimal leg lift.  Has simplified base from previous showings. Stride tends to open slightly.  Created good timing and used rear side acceleration. Arm bar to Load, but not through path.  Quick hands and repeatable path. Demonstrated good barrel control. Tendencies were to pull side.  Exit VELO: 77 Showed nice progressions from previous videos, good Growth!
Power: Potential with Strength added, but would view him as 1B/2B guy
Arm: OF VELO:  73 Arm will improve with strength and long toss. 
Defense: OF  Good approach and hand eye to the ball.  Max effort throws. 

Gus Peonio, Mullen, 2023

Positional Profile: 1B/RHP
Body: 6’4”  190
Run: 8.71
Hit: RHH  Wide, but tall stance.  Sway with light toe tap for stride.  Weight transfers to front side before launch.  Hands extend to slight arm bar and bat head adjusted to upright.  Hip slide to rear side Acceleration. Barrel enters the zone early and levels through zone.  Some length. Shows quickness and strength. Long Lever Lean hitter with ability to develop. Exit Velo:  79
Power: Potential
Arm: 1B  Velo: 75   Short arm with minimal back side arc.   Good extension on throws and accuracy. 
Defense: Good movements and footwork around 1B..6’4” long lever 2023.  Variety of possibilities for development Good Follow

Tyler Smith, Ponderosa, 2022

Positional Profile:  OF/RHP
Body: 5’9”    175
Run: 7.94
Hit: RHH  Simple base, with  leg lift and slight coil to stride.  Creates momentum with stride to balanced launch.  Front side dominant at launch. Minimal movement with hands to load.  Direct path to ball with plus bat speed. Exit Velo: 86 Repeatable path and demonstrated middle of the field approach.   Follow through has length and one handed extension. Exaggerated rotation. 
Power: Aggressive swing habits with strength and length.  Strong potential for power with great skill progression
Arm:  OF Velo: 76   Arm works well. 
Defense:  Actions were simple with good hand/eye.  Footwork created foundation to throwing. Good catch to release.
