Denver - It turned into a laugher, but there was no gloating.

Slammers Bauer basically spanked Cherry Creek 10-1 at Metro State to nab the Under-18 portion of the Centennial State Games Tournament by Prep Baseball Report-Colorado. On a gloriously sunny Sunday, Slammers Bauer broke it open late and won by the field’s eight-run rule after five innings. and felt as pleased as it did fortunate.

“Oh, year, it’s always fun to play those guys, without a doubt,” Slammers coach Scott Bauer said. .

Slammers designated hitter Jordan Stubbings, late of Legend High in Parker, agreed about taking down the traditional power.

“They’re amazing,” Stubbings said of the long list of outstanding players in the Cherry Creek program. “(Coach) Marc Johnson does a great job. He’s a world-renowned coach. I respect those guys so much.”

With a 2-1 lead entering the fifth inning, Slammers Bauer laid eight runs on Cherry Creek. Against starter Jacob Hilton and reliever Tanner O’Tremba, Slammers sent 13 batters to the plate, pounded out seven hits, managed four walks and took advantage of two wild pitches. Along the way, Slammers also grouped three two-run singles, by Tyson Hays, Josh Dudden and Joey Rembisz. Stubbings added a bases-loaded walk. Plus, Slammers generated the eight-run rally despite a double play.

Comprised solely of recently graduated seniors from several areas in and around the metropolitan area, Slammers also enjoyed a crack pitching effort. R.J. Dabovich went the distance, allowed only three hits. struck out five, walked two and survived two errors.

“We just want to have fun,” said Stubbings, who will play for Colorado Mesa. “We’re a good team and we’ve played together for a while.”

Bauer added that playing in PBR-CO-sponsored gatherings “is a good time, you see all of the best teams in the state and some out-of-state teams.”

On the other side, Cherry Creek was only able to answer Slammers with a single run in the bottom of the first to tie it and had a base runner on in every inning save for the fourth, but couldn’t put anything together. O’Tremba, who will be a senior next school year and has committed to Texas Tech, had a third-inning triple, yet was stranded.

It was a difficult day for Cherry Creek and Johnson didn’t argue.

“They beat us in every phase,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Cherry Creek tamed Premier West 8-0 as Quentin Parr tossed a five-inning no-hitter. He struck out seven. And Slammers Bauer got past Slammers Loseke. With the exception of that game, Bauer said, it’s obvious that his team “has guys who hit.”

Prime on both schedules will be this week’s Cherry Creek Classic, Thursday through Sunday. Both teams will be attempting to eventually qualify for the Connie Mack World Series. Cherry Creek also will take on a couple of Slammers teams earlier this week.

But it was a high point in the opening days of the summer schedule for Slammers bauer.

“This is the one we wanted to play today,” Coach Bauer said.
