If there was a blueprint of what a first baseman should look like, John Mallon fits the bill. The bulky Highlands Ranch High School senior has a first baseman frame  -- 6-foot-2, 190-pounds. He looks large and plays large.

PBR Colorado state director John Cackowski, who has been his high school coach, defines Mallon as a hitter: "Hits from a tall, open setup, hands load back smoothly, utilizes a short stride that he closes  down before ball enter hitting  zone. Swing is fast through the zone producing uphill bat path spraying line drives from gap-to-gap producing 85 mph exit velocity off the tee.

Mallon understands about getting better each day.

"Every day this summer I went and hit on my own or with my dad," he said. "I'd like to add some power to my swing. I also have to work on going the other way. I pull the ball  frequently, so I need to be able to go to the opposite field with the outside pitch. Plus, I'm working on hitting the curve ball."

Defensively, Mallon works constantly on his footwork, knowing he must have good feet to be able to have success as a first baseman."Footwork around the bag is always something I'm working on," he said.

Mallon is uncommitted but has been contact by Adams State University in Alamosa and the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

"Hopefully, I'll get some more schools talking to me," he said.

Mallon wants to study business and perhaps broadcasting.

"I'd really like to own by own business some day," he said.
