Junior Sunbelt Tryout Catching Analysis

The Junior Sunbelt Classic Tryout took place Sunday May 3rd at ThunderRidge High School.  75 players from the 2016 and 2017 classes were on display at this event.  Prep Baseball Report Colorado will bring you analysis by position of the players who participated in the showcase.   Kicking off our showcase analysis are the catchers, where we saw strong arms with sub 2 pop-times and quick bats with power.

Top Catching Prospects:

Dalton Beveridge, Castleview, 2016, C
5-foot-9, 130-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Pop times were 2.09-2.10. Shows good actions behind plate. Had a 68 mph position velocity. Still behind the plate with soft hands. At the plate, not-much movement with quite load and line-drive swing that produced a 76 mph exit velocity. Good lower half. Ran a 7.33 60 which was the fastest among the catchers.

Chris Diehl, Rocky Mountain, 2016, C/RHP
5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher, a member of the defending 5A state champion Lobos.  At the plate, athletic-balanced set up, no wasted movement in load, smooth, fast bat speed with level path, strong lower half, works inside the ball with middle-opposite approach, pull power, and posted an exit velocity of 89 MPH off the tee, runs a 7.70 60-time.  As a catcher, fluid footwork, quiet lower half, soft hands and a clean exchange, accurate throws at 78 MPH, pop times between 2.04 and 2.08. Vocal leader behind the plate.

Josh Carrillo, Broomfield, 2016, C/1B
5-foot-9 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher.  His pop-times were between 2.10 and 2.16.  Carrillo has a fluid exchange and a positional velocity of 70 MPH. Shows soft hands when framing.  Ran a 7.8 60-time.  At the plate, has a balanced stance with slight crouch, no stride approach with good leg drive through the ball produced an exit velocity of 83 MPH off the tee.  He has a level swing that produced mostly line drives.

Riley Gregory, Pine Creek, 2016, C
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher. Showed good quick actions behind plate. Framed well with little movement. Soft-hands. Had fastest pop-time at event at 1.82 with a position velocity of 75 mph. Gregory had a balanced stance with minimal load. Very level, slight-uphill line-drive swing that produced 90 mph exit velocity which was the highest among catcher at the tryout. Ran a 7.58 60 time.

Kelton McCoy, Bayfield, 2016, C/3B
6-foot-3, 195-pound big right-handed hitting catcher that shows that he is continuing to progress. He showed a quick, clean exchange that produces pop-times between 1.97 and 2.02.  His throws had carry and were consistently on the bag.  He recorded a positional velocity of 77 MPH from the crouch and ran a 7.55 60-time. Offensively, he starts with a balanced, athletic stance and has a simple load with a level bat path. Hit two home runs out during batting practice. Shows power potential at the plate. He has a gap to gap approach that consistently resulted in line drives and produced an exit velocity of 89 MPH off the tee.

Kyler Paterson, Fort Collins, 2016, C
5-foot-10, 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher with a strong lower half hits from a balanced setup, short stride, hands load back smoothly, uphill bat path, high finish, right-center field approach with line drives during batting practice, 87 mph exit velocity off the tee. Defensively, pop times ranged from 2.14-2.16, 69 mph out of the crouch to second, over-the-top arm slot with some accuracy. Moves well when framing pitches. Ran a 8.06 60 time.

Brett Pearson, Alamosa, 2016, C/OF
5-foot-6 140-pound right-handed hitting catcher.  Behind the plate, has quick feet, quick/clean exchange, mostly accurate throws, 71 MPH positional velocity, pop times between 2.14 and 2.17.  At the plate, slight hand load, lands square, middle-to-opposite approach, level bat path to extension, overall simple and repeatable swing mechanics, 70 MPH exit velocity, had a 8.06 60 time.

Tyler Schubert, Windsor, 2016, C
6-foot-2, 240-pound right handed hitting catcher. Big strong looking player. Produces most of his power from his upper body. Slight uphill swing that produces gap to gap raw power. Had a 88 mph exit velocity. If he can get lower half involved a little more can produce more power. For big player frames well and had quick feet. Soft hands. Had a 2.11 pop time and 76 mph position velocity. Ran a 7.88 60.

Paul Thompson, Legacy, 2016, C/3B
5-foot-11 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher.  At the plate, smooth load, loads lower half, fast bat speed, pull power, fluid rhythm, level to contact, high finish, 88 MPH exit. Thompson ran a 7.81 60-time. Shows power potential, and should be a middle of the lineup/clean-up type hitter for Legacy. Behind the plate, soft hands with framing, fluid/quick exchange, throws were very accurate, mobile and athletic and good actions behind the plate, pop times between 2.09 and 2.11, 76 MPH positional velocity. Hard worker.  Thompson will be a catcher to watch in the 2016 season.
