Game Recap

The 7-10 Regis Jesuit Raiders squared off against the 10-6 Legend Titans Monday at Legend field.  The matchup pitted two of the state’s best pitching prospects Junior RH pitcher and North Carolina commit Bo Weiss and Senior RH pitcher and New Mexico commit Peyton Remy.  The 11 inning marathon game featured solid performances by both young men.

The Raiders jumped on the board early in the top of the 1st with an RBI single to leftfield by junior DH Nick Spiliotis, driving in Jimmy Hollinger.  Legend fought back in the bottom of the 2nd, with a leadoff single by senior 1st baseman Mateo Shannon.  Senior Kyle Morse (Monterrey Peninsula CC commit) added another single bringing up catcher Cody Maynard who picked up an RBI tying the game 1-1.  In the top of the 3rd, Nick Spiliotis reached first base on error by the 1st baseman.  Senior catcher Trevor Doerr hits a line drive double to CF scoring Spiliotis, putting the Raiders back on top 2-1.  Legend wouldn’t remain behind long as senior RF Greg Pickett (Mississippi State commit) crushes full count fastball over the centerfield wall tying the game up 2-2.

Pickett’s homerun would be the last run scored until the 11th inning as both starting pitchers buckled down and started dealing.  Peyton Remy threw 5 ¾ solid innings and went on to strike out 3 batters and walking only 2, producing groundball after groundball putout.  Counterpart Bo Weiss went 6.2 innings punching out 7 Legend hitters on the day, walking only 3 batters.  Fast forward to the top of 7, Legend left-handed relief pitcher Justin Wick strikes out the side, 2 looking. Bottom 7, the Titans threaten with bases loaded, 2 outs and Greg Pickett at bat.  However, senior pitcher Connor Sinks closes out the end of regulation getting Pickett to pop out to 3rd base in which Austin Chouinard made a brilliant catch against the 3rd baseline fence.

The Titans would get another chance to win the game in the bottom of the 8th with a leadoff double down the right field line by senior Jordan Stephens.  The Titans however couldn’t capitalize on Stephens double and the game moved on into the 9th.  Regis fails to get runners in scoring position giving Legend yet another crack at the win.  Senior centerfielder Nick Mathey hit a 1out double, and senior Issac Rincones was walked putting runners on 1st and 2nd.  Jordan Stephens hit a single up the middle, Mathey tries to score from second but is gunned down at home plate by a superb throw by Quin Cotton, ending the inning and Legend’s hope of a walk off base hit.

The game would go another 2 innings, and in the top of the 11th, junior Ryan Vottiero reaches base safely and the hero of the game Austin Chouinard getting the eventual game winner driving in Vottiero.  Senior RH pitcher Wesley Stark would shutdown the Titans in the Bottom of the 11th, giving the Regis Raiders a 3-2 win.  The Raiders improve their record to 8-10 overall and the Legend Titans fall to 10-7 overall.
