State Director

Leading up to the start of the high school season, we will count down the top 50 preseason teams every day as part of our comprehensive season coverage. The top 50 teams are picked from all classifications, and are not divided up by class level:

Team: Pueblo West
Preseason Rank:
43
2014 Record:
9-11-1
Conference: South Central
CHSAA Class: 4A
Head Coach: Dan Sanchez
Playoff Run: Lost in District Championship game to Niwot
2014 Final Rank: 51

Returning Starters: 8
Returning Pitchers:
4

TOP PLAYERS:

Chase Trujillo: 2015 5-7, 165 lbs, R/L, OF
Dauson Tate 2016, 5-7, 175 lbs,  R/R, C
RJ Dabovich: 2017, 6-3 185 lbs, RHP

X-FACTOR:

Darin Robinson: The Cyclones are going to need Robinson to build off his up and down junior season on the mound. Robinson has a great arm, but he will need to build off the experience of the 20 innings pitched in 2014. They will need Robinson to hold down the number 2 spot in the rotation after Tyler Evans so the they can make noise in May.

 NEW PLAYER TO WATCH:
RJ Dabovich, RHP, 2017: At 6-foot-3, 185 pounds, Dabovich has been clocked in the mid 80's with his fastball.  Dabovich has a chance to log some significant innings in 2015.

KEY PLAYER LOST:
OF/P Zac Drury: Air Force Appointment

 STAT RAT:
Last summer in the PBR Colorado Top Prospect Games at Cherry Creek, 2015 MIF/OF Javy Garcia ran two 60's, one at 6.32, the other at 6.38. One of the fastest times in the country.

BOTTOM LINE:
The Cyclones bring 8 starters back in 2015 from a team that came three innings away from making a 4A final 8 appearance in 2014. The loss of graduated OF/P Zac Drury will have an impact, however the Cyclones return over 385 varsity at-bats from 2014. The Cyclones lost twice to rival Pueblo East in 2014 to account for 2 of their 7 losses, and cost them a 2014 Southern League Title. Javy Garcia has a great opportunity to step up and fill the void of Drury's absence. Garcia has the skill set to be a 4A All-State caliber player. The Cyclones also return RHP Tyler Evans to 2015. Evans will be one of the top pitchers in the 4A Class. What will be important is if Evan gets help behind him.
