This past weekend at the Hylands Hills Sports Complex 14 of the best 13U D1 and D2 teams competed in the Colorado Spring Opener No.3. Below is the recap of the 13D1 semi-finals and championship game. To see complete results of the tournament click here

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME SUNDAY

5280 TIGERS 11 BRIGHTON BIG HORNS 6

The Brighton Big Horns came out hot in the first inning scoring 3 runs, and 5280 Tigers responded in the bottom of the 1st inning with 2 runs, but then in the 2nd inning with 2023 RHP Mason Bright shutting down the Big Horns in the top of the 2nd, the Tigers exploded for 7 runs led by 2023 Derek Olsen. Olsen hit a bases loaded triple clearing the bases, and then with an errant throw from the Big Horns 2023 Olsen jogged home to clear the bases. 2023 RHP Tate Smith came in and pitched 2 innings allowing just 1 run.  

 

Mason Bright RHP / 3B / Eaton, CO / 2023

Plays for 5280 Tigers. 5-foot-10, 155 pounds. Bats and throws right. On the mound has a very loose quick arm for his age. Stands tall, throws from stretch. Lands slightly closed, and falls off to 1B. Comes from high 3/4 arm slot. Fastball lives 72-75 mph which is advanced for his age. Fastball touched 79 mph at Colorado Junior Future Tryouts. Could get more lower leg drive and extension towards plate. At the plate has pre-stride rhythm, short stride, and quick hands through the zone. Slightly uphill swing, and has pull-side tendencies. Exit velocity off the tee was 83 mph. Also threw 81 mph from 3rd to 1st. 

 

 

Tate Smith RHP / 1B / Eaton, CO / 2023

Plays for 5280 Tigers. 6-foot, 160 pounds. Bats and throws right. Already has big presence on mound for his age. Pitches primarily from stretch. Arm is quick and loose from high 3/4 slot. Fastball lives 72-75 mph. Throws a curveball with 11/5 shape at 63 mph. There is more velo left on table if more leg drive and extension towards plate is created. At the plate stands tall, slight load back, leg-kick, and uphill swing path with pull-side tendencies. Has power, and exit velo off tee at Colorado Junior Future tryouts was 81 mph. 

 

Preston Jennings OF / RHP / Rampart High School, CO / 2022

Plays for the Colorado Yard Dawgs. 5-foot-6, 125 pounds. Bats and throws right. Throw primarily from the stretch. Not much of a balance point, arm slot is straight back, and comes from a high 3/4 arm slot. Lands in-line, then falls off to 1B. Arm is quick and loose. Fastball lived 65-67 mph touching 69. 

 

 

Brandon Sanchez SS / RHP / Legacy, CO / 2023

5-foot-4, 110 pounds. Had an outstanding day on Sunday hitting 3 homeruns, 2 over the fence. Has advanced power for his age. Has excellent pre-swing rhythm with leg kick. Hands load soft back. Gap to gap power. 78 mph exit velocity at Colorado Junior future tryouts. 69 mph across the diamond
