Rock Canyon Defeats Legend 9-7

By PBR Staff

HIGHLANDS RANCH - The Legend Titans traveled to Rock Canyon on Monday in another tough Continental League matchup of two of the best teams at the 5A level. On the mound for the Titans was senior RHP Kyle Cardona, and the Jaguars countered with senior RHP Matt Givin. The Jaguars would come away with a 9-7 victory, but senior OF Jordan Stubbings did everything he could to prevent it from happening.

The Jaguars jumped on Cardona and the Titans early. After Stubbings would single in the top of the first to give the Titans the first, but the Jaguars would take advantage of Cardona's command issues in the bottom of the inning scoring three runs off 3 walks with the bases loaded.

Titans sophomore Justin Boyd (Oregon State commit) would get 2-out RBI single off Givin, who himself was not as sharp after throwing 110 pitches in previous start, in the top of the 2nd to cut the Jaguar lead to 3-2, but the Jaguars would score three more runs highlighted by a Nick Merone double to increase their lead to 6-2.

In the top of the 3rd inning Stubbings would strike again with a 2-run home run to again cut the lead to 6-4.

The game would settle down in the bottom of the 3rd and top of 4th with two scoreless half innings, but the Jaguars would score another 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th highlighted by Wyatt Wendall's second hit of the day driving in a run.

Andrew Rockne, now in relief for Givin, would pitch a scoreless 5th preserving the 9-4 lead, but the Titans would load the bases off Rockne in the top of 6th, and freshman Tyler Smith would come in relief. Stubbings again would come up with another big hit driving in two runs with two outs to cut the score to 9-7.

LHP junior Brody McCord, in for the Titans, would pitch a scoreless bottom of the 6th. In the top of the 7th Smith would hit the lead off hitter senior Joey Rembisz to start the inning. Head Coach Tyler Munro, feeling the game was getting too close for comfort, would bring back in his ace Givin. Givin would strike out the next two batters and get a ground out to end the game.

The Jaguars would improve to 10-3 on the season and 2-2 in the Continental League and next play at Regis Jesuit on 4-19-17. The Titans fall to 7-5 on the season, and are 1-3 in the Continental League. They next play Chaparral on the same day at Double Angel Field in Parker.
