Top Prospect Games Corners Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Top Prospect Games took place on August 8th and 9th at the Slammers South Baseball Facility in Englewood, Colorado.  89 prospects showed up and strutted their stuff in a pro-style workout. Over the next several days the PBR Scouting staff will roll out position-by-position rankings of the event, culminating with the Top Ten Overall Prospects from the showcase.

Our first two analysis of the event focused on the catchers, and outfielders. Today we focus on a the corners.

corners Analysis: Best of the Best

Nick Perez, 3B, Cherokee Trail, 2017
5-foot-10, 215 pounds. Bats left and throws right. Perez is a strong, stocky 3B. Crouches at the plate with a wide, slightly opened stance. Uses toe-tap stride and generates a level, long swing through the zone with pull power producing 86 mph exit velocity. Gets hands to the ball well on inside pitch. Shows solid fundamentals at 3B and good range to right and left. Threw 73 mph across the infield from short 3/4 arm slot. Ran a 7.5 60. Competes, and is a good instinctive baserunner.

Luke Ziegler, 3b/RHP, Valor Christian, 2018
6-foot-1, 165-pound, third base and right-handed pitcher. Was recognized as having the best swing in the 2018. Looks even more athletic then since we last saw him in January. Defensively, he shows good feet and a quick arm produced 82 mph velocity across the diamond which was way up from 66 at January event.  At the plate he hits from a straight balanced upright stance, gets his front foot down early with a long stride.  Has a level, line drive swing with long finish and good hands to the ball.  Exit velocity was 85 mph  Time will help Luke continue to grow and develop. Luke ran a 7.7 60 time. On the mound he looks very polished and smooth. Arm works well from high 3/4 slot. Has long legs so you can see he's going to fill out. Was consistently 80 mph touching 81, and a 66 mph curveball with 11/5 shape.

Best of the Best (Listed Alphabetically)

Kevin Ball, 1B, Highlands Ranch, 2017
6-foot-3, 185 pounds. Bats and throws right. We love Ball's size, and frame at 1B. Has balanced athletic stance with short leg kick. Hands are short and inside to the ball, and is a line drive hitter. Ball produced an 82 mph exit velocity off a tee. At first base shows soft hands, good feet, and a quick release. Threw 70 mph to 3B. While watching him play in games, if he takes a "yes,yes" attitude with confidence he could be an offensive force. Ran a 7.63 60. On the mound because of size show potential but is still raw. Has more velocity to gain if he generates a full arm whip through motion. He tends to stop short. Threw 75-76 mph with fb from short arm slot. Does a good job of getting chest out front. Curve was 63 mph with 11/5 shape. Intriguing prospect on both sides to follow.

McGwire Bledsoe, 1B, Greeley West, 2017
5-foot-10, 165 pounds. Bats right and throws left. Has tall, slight open stance and uses a leg kick. Swing patch is short to the ball. Wants to pull the ball. Would like to see him work on getting more extension through zone and finish swing. That could create more bat speed. Exit velocity was 78 mph off the tee. We like his aggressive nature at first base. Attacks balls on the ground. Threw 67 mph to 3B. Ran a 7.47 60 time.

Logan Bradshaw, 3B, Columbine, 2018

6-foot-1, 165-pounds, right-handed 3B/SS hits from a tall balanced stance.  Good weight transfer and a level swing path produced balls with good carry to the left center gap.  He had a 77 MPH exit velocity.  In the field he does a nice job of fielding through the ball, square shoulders and good feet get the ball out of his hand quickly.  A 75 MPH arm velocity from third base produced several accurate throws. He ran a 7.65 60.

Gunnar Garcia, 3B/RHP, Cherry Creek, 2018
5-foot-9, 185-pound, 3B who attacks ground balls.  Good feet both left and right put him in good throwing position on balls across the diamond.  He registered a 70 MPH arm velocity with accurate throws.  At the plate he hits from a slight crouch with a toe tap for timing.  Good weight transfer and a short swing plane produced an 86 MPH exit velocity.  He ran a 7.75 60. Garcia also showed well on the mound. Garcia was was given the fastball with best movement award at the event.

Eric Gambon, 1B, Centaurus, 2017
6-foot-0, 160-pound, left handed 1B who shows good quick feet coming off the back.  He gets the ball out of his glove quickly and delivers an accurate ball at 65 MPH.  At the plate he starts with a tall balanced stance, but quickly moves to 60/40 with a long slow load.  Hands stay high in the zone and good hip turn creates an 83 MPH exit velocity with balls that carry well to the right center gap.  He ran a 7.44 60.

Chris Lara, 3B, Columbine, 2017
5-foot-7, 180-pound, 3B/C who hits from the right side with some power to the left center gap.  He hits from a 60/40 stance with good rotation against a strong front side. Hands are short to the ball and good extension through the ball.  An 87 MPH exit velocity and a slight upward swing produced a lot of balls in the air during batting practice. From third base, Lara does a nice job of getting behind the ball and delivers a strong throw across the diamond.   Throws were accurate and registered 71 MPH across the diamond.  Ran an 8.25 60 at this event.

Carter Pennington, 1B, Columbine, 2017
5-foot-11, 210-pound, 1B who bats left and throws right.  Uses a balanced narrow stance with high leg kick to begin a swing that stays in the zone for a long time.  Good lower leg drive and an 85 MPH exit velocity produces good power gap to gap. Ball jumps off the bat. Liked to pull the ball during the batting practice round.  At first he showed smooth actions on double play balls off the bag.  Accurate throws to second registered at 67 MPH.  He ran an 8.15 60.

Nolan Pennington, 1B, Columbine, 2017
5-foot-9, 190-pound, 1B/RHP who bats left and throws right.   He hits from a balanced stance with a slight stride for timing.  Front side opens with the swing and cause most balls to be pulled to the right side.  He stays balanced through the swing and finishes high with the bat and is long through the ball.  He had a 79 MPH exit velocity.  From first base, he moves well on balls to his right.  Time will help increase a 69 MPH arm velocity.  He ran a 9.50 60.

Jordan Stubbings, 3B, Legend, 2017
6-foot-1, 195-pound, right-handed 3B/1B, hits from a tall balanced stance.  A long stride allows for good weight transfer and for contact to be made while on his front side.  A level swing plane and quick hands produced an 88 MPH exit velocity and he showed good power to both gaps.  Good feet and shoulders had the ball in the throwing window quickly with an arm velocity of 72 MPH.  He ran an 8.10 60.

Colton Talton, 1B/C, Pueblo County, 2017
6-foot-0, 200-pound, 1B/C hits from a balanced stance with a high leg kick for timing.  He hits off a firm front side and has a slight upward swing plane.  An 88 MPH exit velocity produced balls with good carry to the pull side.  Agile feet in the field put him in good position to turn 2 and accurate throws registered a 69 MPH arm velocity.  He ran a 7.8 60.

Mathew Turner, 2017, Broomfield High School, 1B/RHP
6-foot-5, 180-pounds. Bats and throws right. Has wide, pigeon toe tall stance. Hands are short to the ball in swing, and is long through the ball.  Good lower half drive at contact produced an a much improved 87 mph exit velocity from June Denver Metro ID where he was 83 mph off the tee.  Turner ran a 7.5 60 at this event, and we have had as low as 7.47. Turner is athletic around the bag at first base that put him in good throwing position to 2nd base on double play balls. Arm velo across the field was consistent with what we have seen at 70 mph. Turner continues to improve, and we like his frame at 1B, and projectability.
