Jeff Markle
Assistant State Director

PBR Colorado strives to be the most comprehensive source of player information across the state. The Prep Baseball Report is the No. 1 resource for high school baseball in each state we cover through our variety of events, boots-on-the-ground scouting staff, daily coverage, and multimedia platforms. Our multimedia platforms and events work in tandem, ultimately creating the most powerful source of high school baseball promotion in each state.  While other organizations take a national approach, our goal is to become the authoritative voice on the ground level of each state.

With our first premier event of 2018 three weeks away, we will introduce you to players who are registered.  Kicking off our look at Underclass Invitational participants is No. 57 2020 OF/RHP Kellen Hodges from Chatfield Senior High School.

PBR:  Describe yourself as a baseball player to those who have never seen you play:

Hodges: I am a hardworking, hard-nosed, give 100% every pitch and play kind of player. I am a solid defensive player who coaches know will always sell out when needed. I stay focused at the plate, and I pride myself on being a situational hitter. My goal is to hit the ball hard and where it is pitched.

PBR:  What would be your dream school to play baseball at?  If you have already committed to play at the next level, why did you choose that particular school?

Hodges: I would love to play somewhere on the west coast, preferably California. Cal Poly would be awesome.

PBR:  What are your best assets on and off the field at this point in your high school career?

Hodges: On and off the field, I try to be a silent leader. I want to lead by action, and not just by words. I always work hard, and I separate myself from “the average” by putting in work outside of practice, games, and workouts with the mindset that I want to be the best.

PBR:  What is the best baseball advice you have received and try to follow to this point in your career?

Hodges: The best advice I have received is a quote from Derek Jeter, and even though it is pretty generic and typical, it continues to drive how I play the game: “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.” There are so many players in the past and present that had and have more talent than me who I just plain out worked. This quote inspires me to do that and helps me not get too frustrated when I am out-performed. It reminds to get over it, and go back to the grind so next time I know I’ll be ready and it won’t happen again.

PBR: What does your off-season routine look like to prepare for the upcoming season?

Hodges: My off-season routine bases off the idea that everyday, I need to do something that makes me better. During weekdays, my schedule stays pretty consistent. School, work, BP at Khaos, gym, homework. If I can’t make it up to hit one day, I’ll make sure that I do something else that works towards my goals, like playing long toss or going on a run. A day that goes by where I don’t get better and build my future, is a day wasted.

PBR: What are your superstitions or routines that go on during a season?

Hodges: During a season, I don’t drink soda or any sugary drinks. I want to be in my most athletic form for games. On game days, I try and get a big and healthy meal like subway, and I listen to the same playlist before every game. Before game time I usually pray before every game as a quick reminder of who I am really playing for. Before practices, I get in a certain mindset that I am going to give it my all in everything that I do that practice, because when it’s practice after practice after practice, it can be easy to slack of mentally, which always translates physically for me at least.

PBR: What are your goals for:

This Season: Make varsity, start on varsity, and have an above average season that prepares me for the years to come.

Two Years: Have a scholarship to a school that I want to go to. I want to be at least 180 lbs which I know I can get to. I want to be playing baseball at a college level, and playing the best baseball of my life so far.

Four Years: Starting on a college baseball team and performing above the competition. I want to be on scouts’ radars at this point. My goal now is to play baseball as long as I possibly can.
