Unsigned Senior Games Outfield Analysis

The Prep Baseball Report’s Unsigned Senior Games took place on August 15th and 16th at ThunderRidge High School.  42 Unsigned Seniors played two games and showcased their talents for the Prep Baseball Report staff.  Over the course of the next week we will feature players by positions.  Continuing our coverage is the outfield position.

Outfield Analysis:  Best of the Best

Travis Parker, OF, Grandview High School, 2016
6-foot-1, 180-pounds, Parker picked up where he left off at the Denver Metro ID, a strong arm from the outfield with second best arm velocity at 85 MPH.  His ball has good carry and is accurate.  He moves well on balls to his glove side and good feet keep him in good throwing position.  At the plate he hits from a wide stance with a slight heel lift for timing.  Good leg drive through the ball produced an 86 MPH exit velocity off the pitch.  He finishes his swing sitting on his back leg.  One of the top overall outfielders at the USG.  He ran a 7.13 60.

Cooper Shearon, OF/3B, Mountain Vista High School, 2016
6-foot-1, 215-pound, right handed hitting OF/3B who displayed good power and plate awareness at the USG.  Shearon hits from a wide balanced stance with little movement to get started.  He has good leg drive through the ball and had an 88 MPH exit velocity off the pitch.  He is a solid gap-to-gap hitter with pull power.  In the field he moves well on balls to both gaps, he throws over the top and has a ball with good carry.  His arm velocity was 77 MPH from right field.  He ran a 7.4 60.  

Zach Sundine, OF/LHP, Grandview High School, 2016
A 5-foot-10, 145-pound, two way player that gets the most out of his frame.  At the plate he hits from a balanced stance with very little movement to start.  He opens his front side up and uses good leg drive to produce an exit velocity of 87 MPH off the pitch.  He has a slight upward swing plane and his ball carries wells to the gaps.  In the field he moves well in all directions.  He gets behind the baseball and had an 84 MPH arm velocity from right field.  On the mound he is simple and in line to the plate.  A high ¾ arm slot produced a fastball that was 80-82 MPH at the USG.  He also displayed a 64-67 MPH  curve that dove hard in on right-handed hitters.  He ran a 7.35 60.

Zack Berohn, OF/RHP, Monarch High School, 2016
6-foot-0, 185-pound, right-hand hitting OF/RHP hits from a 60/40 crouched stance.  Does a nice job of keeping the bat in the hitting zone for an extended time.  Good leg drive and hip rotation produced an 85 MPH exit velocity off the pitch.  In the outfield he attacks the ball well and moves well on balls in the gap.  An over the top arm produced an arm velocity of 84 MPH.  His throws were through the cut and accurate to the bag.  He ran a 6.99 60 which was the second fastest time at the event. 

Sam Beyer, OF/2B, Legend High School, 2016
5-foot-10, 150-pound,  right-hand hitting OF/2B hits from a balanced stand with a short stride for timing.  Has good weight transfer at contact and finished on his back leg.  Level hands through the zone produce an exit velocity off the pitch of 79 MPH.  Most balls were struck well during batting practice to left field and left center.  In the outfield, he shows good actions and gets behind the ball well.  Beyer throws from an over the top arm angle and showed good accuracy to the bag.  His arm velocity was, 81 MPH.  He ran a 7.37 60. 

Austin Carson, OF, Mountain Range High School, 2016
6-foot-1, 160-pound lanky outfielder.  Hits from a balanced stance with a toe tap and turned in knee for timing.  His swing has a slight upward plane to it and his ball has good carry to the right center gap.  Quick hands on pitches in produced an exit velocity off the pitch of 83 MPH.  He showed good form in the outfield with fluid feet on balls left and right.  Carson does a nice job getting behind the baseball and throws were on target and cutable.  His arm velocity was 80 MPH.  He ran a 6.94 60. 

Andrew Coverly, OF/RHP, Grandview High School, 2016
6-foot-1, 187-pound, OF/RHP impressed with his overall athleticism at the Unsigned Senior Games.  At the plate he hits from a wide balanced stance.  An upward swing plane produced balls with good carry during BP.  Good leg drive through the zone produced an exit velocity of 92 MPH off the pitch.  In the Outfield he moved well on balls left and right and displayed a strong 86 MPH accurate arm.  On the mound he drops down and throws from a ¾ to side arm angle.  A smooth delivery and good arm speed on all pitches produced an 80-83 MPH fastball and 73-75 curve that moved sharp away from the right handed hitters. 

Colton Hager, OF/1B, Legend High School, 2016
6-foot-3, 165-pound, right handed hitting OF/1B, showed fluid motion and good feet in the outfield.  He moves well to his glove side and delivered a good ball to the bag.  His arm velocity was 82 MPH from right field.  At the plate he starts with a slightly open stance, remains tall through the swing and good hip turn produced an exit velocity of 88 MPH off the pitch.  He ran a 7.08 60.

Mathew Meraz, OF/RHP, Cherokee Trail High School, 2016
A 6-foot-0, 175-pound, right-handed hitting two way player had a good weekend at the USG.  At the plate he hits from a tall balanced stance with a front heel lift for timing.  Hands start at the top of the zone and sweep through on a level plane.  His exit velocity off the pitch was 80 MPH, but many balls were well struck to the left center gap.  From the outfield he delivers an accurate ball that is easily cutable when needed.  His over the top arm action produced an arm velocity of 78 MPH.  He ran a 7.09 60. 

Taj Mitchell, OF/RHP, Legend High School, 2016
5-foot-9, 155-pound, right-handed hitter has lots of moving parts in his swing.  He starts from a balanced, slightly crouched stance.  A high leg kick and long load put him in position to drive through the baseball.  During batting practice he had a 79  MPH exit velocity off the pitch and  turns well on the inside ball.  In the outfield, he is quick and runs down balls to his glove side well.  His arm velocity from right field was 83 MPH.  On the he is straight over the top with his delivery.  His fastball was 75-78 with good command of both sides of the plate.  A 60-63 mph curve kept several hitters off balance. He ran a 7.25 60. 

Larry Nolasco, OF/LHP, Bruce Randolph School, 2016
A 5-foot-8, 145-pound solid two way player who played well all weekend at the USG.  At the plate he hits from a slight open stance with high leg kick for timing.  His upper body carries his swing with minimal leg drive.  His exit velocity off the pitch was 81 MPH and he showed good bat control on balls to all fields.  In the field he covers good ground and keeps himself in good throwing position.  His arm velocity from right field was 77 MPH.  A sink and drive pitcher who throws from a high ¾ arm slot had a fastball that was 78-81 MPH on the weekend.  His out pitch is his curve ball that has tight spin and late break; it was gunned consistently between 69-72 MPH.  He ran a 8.4 60. 

John Oliver, OF/RHP, Highlands Ranch High School, 2016
A 6-foot-1, 165-pound right handed hitting outfielder who displayed good form and instincts at the USG.  In the outfield he throws over the top and put the ball on a good straight line to the bag.  His Arm velocity was 68 MPH from right field.  At the plate he hits from a balanced stand with a small stride for timing.  His best hip drive is on balls in and tend to get stuck on his back side a bit.  During batting practice, he used both gaps well and showed good power to left field.  His exit velocity was 78 MPH off the pitch.  He ran a 7.3 60.  

Cruz Ramirez, OF/RHP, Brighton High School, 2016
A 6-foot-3, 180-pound, solid looking athlete who showed well in the USG.  At the plate he has a simple set up and simple swing.  A balanced stance with a short stride put him in good launch position.  He has long arms that keep the bat in the zone for an extended time.  His exit velocity off the bat was 82 MPH and he hit several balls off the fence in the left center gap.  In the outfield he gets behind the ball well and comes all the way through his throws.  His arm velocity was 79 MPH from right field.  He ran a 7.3 60. 

Dante Teigen, OF/RHP, Canyon City High School, 2016
A 6-foot-3, 175-pound two way player with room to grow into his frame.  He hits from a tall balanced stance with a slight bat wrap to get going.  His long arms keep the bat in the hitting zone and good leg drive produced an 85 MPH exit velocity off the pitch.  From the field he moves well to his glove side and uses a long arm to produce a 79 MPH arm velocity from right field.  On the mound is delivers in a straight line to the plate.  An over the top arm angle had his fastball at 74-77 MPH.  His curve ball comes from the same arm slot and was gunned at 63-65 MPH.  He ran a 7.31 60.
