Updated Colorado 2022 Rankings

John Cackowski
Director of Scouting

The 2022 class is quickly growing up with many players gaining valuable experience at the varsity level this spring. All across the PBR landscape, our boots-on-the-ground staff has quickly become acquainted with the impressive crop of freshmen. They have made themselves known with loud performances in games, as well as exhibiting strong tool sets that will continue to develop.

Prep Baseball Report Colorado has had the opportunity to cover amateur baseball like no other organization has ever been able to do before in the state of Colorado. Between scouting numerous games this spring and having a great opportunity to see more 2022 grads at the Class of 2022 Preview in May, Underclass Invitational in January, and the Top Prospect Games last summer. We were able to create our first 2022 ranking. The first ranking we go to 50 players, and we expect this list to grow and change a lot as players develop more. Next ranking update will be after our Top Prospect Games in August at Cherry Creek High School. Below is a look at our first top ten in the 2022 class.

Dylan Carey SS / RHP / Regis Jesuit, CO / 2022

Coming in at No. 1, uncommitted. 6-foot-2, 175 pounds. Bats and throws right. Carey has a tall, balanced stance, load is slow and straight back gaining good separation and extension.Swing is slightly uphill through the zone, but barreled everything gap to gap with good bat control having the ability to cover both sides of the plate.  Generated an 89 mph exit velocity off a tee. Contact hitter with a feel to hit, and future power potential as he fills out. Projects as a future 3-hole hitter type of hitter. In the field showcases good lateral movement to both sides, soft hands, and quick feet. Arm was strong an accurate across the diamond at 82 mph. Ran a 7.1 60 time.

Dallas Macias RHP / SS / Regis Jesuit, CO / 2022

Coming in at No. 2, uncommitted. 5-foot-11, 160 pounds. Switch hitter. Macias has chance to really be an offensive force. Swing mirrors itself from the right and left side.  Hands are high in the zone and he uses a quick stride to trigger the swing.  Shows good weight transfer and drives the baseball. Strong, athletic build. Macias has good arm speed coming forward, as evident with his 85 mph fastball that touched 86, and their is not much effort to gain velocity. Still growing, Macias swings a little to balance point, but lands inline towards mound squared to the plate. Had good fastball command, and was down in the zone with all three pitches. Better command to the glove side part of the plate. Curveball still developing at 62-63 mph which is a lot of deviance from fastball. Had better feel with his change up at 70-73 mph. He will learn to command secondary pitches, and has a lot of room to grow. Can't ignore 86 mph fastball at his age. In the field fields the ball out front with soft quick hands. Good lateral movement to both sides. Strong arm across the diamond at 83 mph. Ran a 7.30 60 time.

In 36 innings pitched Mejia struck out 33 batters. Polished and fluid on the mound, Mejia's fastball lives 81-82 mph with asr. Is square and inline to the plate with a loose arm from a 3/4 arm slot and effortless motion. Curve has late break with 2/7 shape. Change thrown at same arm speed as fastball at 72 mph with late fade. Will be one of the top LHP in the state moving forward.

Trevor Moore RHP / Mullen, CO / 2022

Coming in at No.4, uncommitted, 6-foot-1, 195 pounds. Bats and throws right. Projects to be one of the best two-way players in the state. Moore's fastball lives in the lower to mid 80's with more coming.

Coming in at No.5, uncommitted, 6-0, 170 pounds. Bats and throws right. Yard as a freshman was the No. 1 option on the mound for the Niwot Cougars. Yard threw 35 innings and struck out 35 batters. On the mound has a big frame, still growing. Simple motion towards plate, short on back side then comes from high 3/4 arm angle.  Fastball touches 87 mph but will live 84-85. Curve is thrown at 67-68 mph with 12/6 shape. Projects to throw in the lower 90's sooner then later.

At the plate he is balanced with a long stride on the pitch.  Swing was level through the zone and he squared up several balls both in the live round and in game action.  Exit velocity is 84 mph.  Behind the plate he plays older than he is.  He controls innings and frames well.  Arm was 72 mph with a 2.00 pop-time. On the mound he has a simple motion.  From balance he falls to the plate and release with good extension out front.  Arm is from a high ¾ slot.  Fastball was 79 mph with good command in and out.  He added a 63-65 mph curve with 11/5 break as a good secondary pitch to keep hitters off balance. Had a chance to be the back-up catcher for a good Douglas County team this spring logging 36 at-bats.

Blake Young C / 3B / Mountain Vista, CO / 2022

Coming in at No.7, uncommitted. 5-foot-10, 180 pounds. Bats and throws right. Young has the chance to come in as a sophomore and start for a highly competitive Mountain Vista program. Young is athletic behind the dish, and already controls the game. Had in-between inning pop-times of 1.98 and 2.01. At past events was 1.9 off a coach on throw downs at 72 mph. Greenberg has an advanced hitting approach at the plate. Medium size frame still has room to grow. At the plate has a tall, balanced stance. Swing slightly uphill with pull-side tendencies. Strong arm from the OF that plays at 80 mph. Sub 7 60 time. Expect to be one of the top hitters at the 3A level.
