West Coast Games Recap: Catchers

Josh Reynolds
Colorado State Director

The PBR West Coast Games took place on August 12-14 in Las Vegas at UNLV and College of Southern Nevada. This event is set up to feature uncommitted 2023 graduates from seven states and Canada. Team Colorado started with a pro-style workout on Friday and finished with three games against Arizona (8-6 L), Utah (16-5 W), and Pacific Northwest (3-2 W) on Saturday and Sunday. Team Colorado was well represented and showcased their abilities all weekend. Below is a look at the catchers who represented Colorado at the event.

Jake Paczkowski C / SS / Heritage, CO / 2023

5 foot 11, 165-pound athletic catcher, with room to fill out his frame. Received well and controlled the game behind the plate. Very mobile, can catch from traditional or one knee stance. His pop times were 1.97-2.03 with a 77 position velocity in the workout. Simple, short approach at the plate and works gap to gap. In-game is where he really stood out, competitive at-bats, situational approach, feel for the running game with a high motor. Athletic enough to play multiple positions (Corner OF/1B). Jake loves to play and showed up in all three games.

Brett Rozman C / OF / Palisade, CO / 2023

5 foot 10, 170-pound athletic catcher with present strength and more room to fill out. His pop times were 2.0-2.09, with a position velocity of 77 in the workout. Wide base with balance at the plate, middle approach with pull side pop. In-game he controlled the pitchers, received well, showed good mobility, and threw dimes on stolen base attempts. It seemed like he was on base every at-bat, good feel for the running game at 1B and 2B, and showed his pop with a grand slam vs Team Utah. Tough kid who plays with energy and will make a pitching staff better with his abilities behind the plate.

Samuel Pease C / OF / Fossil Ridge, CO / 2023

5 foot 10, 180-pound catcher who is athletic enough to play corner outfield also. His pop times were 1.95-2.08, with a position velocity of 77. Easy approach at the plate, no wasted movement, inside-out swing, with a lot of 90-plus exit velocities in BP. In-game he plays with a high motor and can do it all behind the plate. Offensively, he put together good at-bats, will get hit by a pitch, execute the game situation and steal a base if needed. Strong kid with good all-around skills who can find a way on the field at multiple positions.

Derek Olsen C / 3B / Legacy, CO / 2023

6 foot 1, 190-pound catcher who impressed in game action. His pop times were 2.01-2.06, with a position velocity of 77. High hands, a narrow base, limited movement, with a gap-to-gap approach at the plate. In-game he works well behind the plate, good receiver, and worked well with the pitchers. At the plate, he had competitive at-bats and contributed in all three games. He can play corner infield also, which can create more opportunities for him to get on the field. A competitive kid who plays hard.
