MADDOX BURNETT (BYU COMMIT)

Maddox Burnett RHP / OF / Erie, CO / 2026

OUR Q&A:

Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Burnett: I went in hoping to hear from schools I was interested in and receive opportunities to play somewhere at the next level. The main thing I was looking for in a program was a winning culture. It’s important to have players around that want to push the absolute best out of each and every one of their teammates. Another big factor for me was going to a school that wanted me and wanted me and saw me as an impact player.

Prep Baseball: Did location play a factor in your decision?

Burnett: Yea for sure. Location was a big part for me because I was going to be living there for the next 3-4 years of my life. I wanted to be somewhere I could feel at home and enjoy myself.

Prep Baseball: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

Burnett: I would say late summer is when things started to heat up for me. I had the opportunity to go play in the Future Games and the Area Code Games which gave me some really good exposure. BYU was at our games consistently over the summer so I got to play in front of them quite a lot.

Prep Baseball: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Burnett: The most intriguing thing about BYU was the culture. I got to watch them play an inter-squad and during game there was constant talk and laughter in the dugout. There was competition but the guys were having fun while playing. I've always wanted to play both sides of the ball as long as I can, so when BYU presented that opportunity as an INF/RHP it was a really good feeling.

Prep Baseball: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Burnett: Air Force, Davidson, Cincinnati, GCU, and New Mexico State were some of the schools I had the most conversations with.

Prep Baseball: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

Burnett: There’s a lot of high caliber players in our state, and I've been lucky to play against a lot of them.

Prep Baseball: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Burnett: I think my freshman year when I made varsity is when it really became a reality that I could play at the next level. I had a lot of older guys above me in my high school program going to the next level and they showed me what it would take. I’ve always been serious about playing at the next level so I knew what I had to put in to get the results I wanted.

Prep Baseball: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Burnett: Stay consistent in everything you do. This game is hard. You’re going to fail but you can’t let those failures define you. The most important days are the days you don’t want to do anything, get up and better yourself, it will pay off.

Prep Baseball: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Burnett: My favorite memory is coming in bases loaded no outs in the bottom of the seventh up by 2 and striking out all 3 in the PG National Elite Tournament. We had to win to make playoffs. Another memorable moment was hitting a go ahead 2 run double in the top of the seventh against a chirpy Banditos' team.

Prep Baseball: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

Burnett: I think our team is going to be solid. We have to play scrappy, but if we can get everyone to buy in we’ll be a tough squad. We are going to be a heavy upper class team with some young guys stepping up.
