9 To Know: Uncommitted Underclassmen New England Procase

Players and prospects from all over the northeast including eight different states made their way to Connecticut for the second annual PBR New England Procase. Last year’s event proved to be the springboard and kick start to 1B Grant LaVigne’s ascension to becoming the 42nd overall pick in the 2018 draft to the Colorado Rockies. This year, 60 players from three different classes (2019-2021) took part in showcasing their skills in a pro-style workout in front of nearly 20 MLB scouts. In the coming days, On the Hunt will break down draft prospects from the 2019 class who performed well, committed underclassmen, and in this edition: the uncommitted underclassmen to know.

Blake Bennett RHP / RHP / Amesbury /Winchendon, MA / 2020

Bennett, now a reclassified 2020, was outstanding in his bullpen session at the PBR New England Procase. Creating an impressive doward plane from a higher ¾ slot, he was able to get on top of the fastball and drive it to the bottom of the zone at 87-89. His strong arm flows continuously through a medium-sized arm stroke as he steps slightly across his body before showcasing quick hand speed through the ball out front while getting extended towards the plate. More interestingly, Bennett snapped off tight, 11/5 curveballs at a firm, 73-75 that featured depth and multi-tier break. The pitch has a chance to be a swing and miss offering at the next level, and plays very well off of his fastball. At 6-foot-3, 210-pounds, Bennett has an ideal, physical frame to carry the load of his strong arm, and while he has some noticeable natural strength, there still appears to be room to add in the future. Overall, Bennett will likely be one of the more sought after, uncommitted 2020 arms in the northeast this spring/summer.
