Prep Baseball Dakotas Super 60 Review

Andy Judkins
State Director, Prep Baseball Dakotas

Every year at the Super 60, players make their mark and give reason to be followed closely throughout the spring. The 23rd edition of the event took place on February 4th, 2024 with top 2024 prospects from across the U.S. and Canada. It was an electric day, with loud rounds of batting practice and some eye-opening bullpen sessions. As always, there were several top draft prospects who came into the event with high expectations--and met them--as well as others who raised their stock.

This coming year's Super 60 event will take place on February 2nd, 2025 in Chicago. With that event ahead, let's take a look back at those who participated from North Dakota and South Dakota.

The Dakotas have had little representation at the Super 60 since the event's inception. However, two right-handed pitchers, Austin Henry (2022) and Gus Radel (2018) of South Dakota, represented the region well in their appearances.

Henry's curveball caught a lot of attention. Spinning it at over 3,200 RPMs with over 20 inches of vertical drop, the mindbending breaking ball has rotation numbers similar to some of the elite arms in Major League Baseball.

"[T]he curveball served as calming presence, albeit an explosive one," Prep Baseball's Vice President of Scouting, Shooter Hunt wrote following the 2022 Super 60 event. "Thrown firmly at 76-80, the Wichita State recruit's innate ability to topspin the ball was well quantified at upwards of -21.6 IVB and up to 3411 RPM on a pitch that falls like an anvil from its crescendo. That pitch, in itself, likely sets Henry's "draft floor" even higher than his peers as its value is of the greatest commodity."

Henry had Tommy John during the 2022 season and spent a year recovering while at Wichita State before transferring to Oklahoma State for 2024. He has since landed in Missouri and is looking to make his first collegiate appearance of his career.
