Notable 2017s From Score International Summer Tryouts

By Mike Maerz
Area Scout/Director of Florida Operations

Last weekend, Score International held their 2016 summer tryouts at the University of Tampa, home of the Spartans. Headed by Sam Marsonek, the 24th overall pick in the 1996 Draft by the Texas Rangers, the Score International program is not only known for its talent on the field, but the types of players they are off the field as well.

Below are some standouts from the 2017 class:

CJ Van Eyk, RHP, Steinbrenner HS, FL
Overall Rank: 15
FL Rank: 41
6-foot-2, 180-pound Florida State recruit. Strong, athletic, projectable build. Fastball sits 87-90 mph and has been clocked up to 92 mph with movement. Locates his pitches and throws on a downward tilt. Repeats and finishes well, balanced. Showed a good feel for his offspeed pitches.

Duncan Hunter, OF, Jesuit HS, FL
Overall Rank: 61
FL Rank: 196
6-foot-2, 200-pounder with a strong, physical build. Continues to get stronger each time we see him. During outfield drills, Hunter displayed range and good actions as he was quick to the ball and delivered on-line, accurate throws from right field with carry. At the plate showed a quick bat with good timing and rhythm. Ball jumps off the bat and has the ability to drive the ball deep into the gaps.

Dalton Wingo MIF/OF, Plant City HS, FL
Overall Rank: 69
FL Rank: 250
6-foot-2, 190-pounder with a lean, athletic build that showed line drive potential from both sides of the plate. From the left hand side, Wingo displayed a short, quick swing and laced several balls deep down the right field line. Loose hands with good hip rotation.

Tommy Mace, RHP, Sunlake HS, FL
Overall Rank: 72
FL Rank: 256
6-foot-6, 180-pound Kentucky recruit. Has a lean, wiry build. During his bullpen, Mace showed a high-3/4 arm slot and threw on a downward plane. Fastball had movement and presents the ability to jump on the batter. Has been up to 89 mph with his fastball just this past October. Projectable and should see an increase in velocity with added strength.

Cam Coakley, OF, Steinbrenner HS, FL
6-foot-1, 190-pound Stetson recruit. Athletic, lean muscle build. In the outfield, Coakley showed an aggressive approach with a quick first step along with range. Takes good routes to the ball and sets himself up to make strong, accurate throws with carry. During batting practice, showcased good bat speed which resulted in multiple line drives from both sides of the plate.

Drew Martin, RHP, Jesuit HS, FL
6-foot-7, 225-pounder with a strong, physical build. Repeats and finishes well. Fastball showed tailing action with late life and sat 84-86 mph, bumped 87. At times showed similar arm slot/speed for his changeup. More velocity to come this summer.

Jacob Ortiz, C, Sunlake HS, FL
5-foot-10, 190-pounder with a thick build and strong lower half. During catching evaluations, Ortiz showed a quick release and sat in the 1.94-1.98 second range with his pop times. Has decent footwork, but some minor fixes should allow for better footwork and quickness. Throws were on line and accurate. Showed some line drive potential during batting practice.

Garrett Sheppard, C, Jesuit HS, FL
5-foot-11, 180-pound Coastal Carolina recruit. Athletic build. Behind the plate showed good footwork and quick release which resulted in a 1.89-1.95 second pop time range. During batting practice, Sheppard showed extension and quick hands with the ability to square up the ball. Good load and follow through.
