2018 Florida Top Prospect Games Positional Breakdown: Catchers

West Palm Beach, FL- On October 11th, the 2018 Florida Top Prospect Games took place at Henley Field which featured some of the top 2019-2022s throughout the state. Players participated in a pro-style workout followed by a game.
Over the next week, we will breakdown each player by position through report. Today, we take a look at all the catchers in attendance:

Matthew Menendez C / 1B / ESB Academy , FL / 2020The 2018 Future Games participant continues to show his overall potential. Defensively, the hands work and is an above average receiver. He has continued to grow and as he grows into the frame and strength the footwork and arm should continue to improve as he had pop times in the 2.19-2.26 range. Offensively, He uses a leg kick trigger and clears his backside well. He can cut himself off at times diving with the top half, but when he stays tall and lets his hands work there is present bat speed and better use of his strength. Overall, the tools are there and should continue to see an uptick as he adds strength.

Isaac Ferrer C / 3B / Elev8 Baseball Academy, FL / 2020Rankings StateRank: 137 / POS: 25
Uncommitted, the 5-foot-10, 180 pound catcher has a typical stocky, strong catcher frame. Defensively, he has solid actions, while having present strength, he has flexibility and shows the his lateral agility in his blocking skills. The pop times weren’t the best we have seen and his best of the day was 2.15, but you can see the arm strength and transfer, he topped out at 76 mph. Offensively, he was a bit out of sync in BP, but when he gets his load on time, he uses his strong lower half well and attacks the baseball. There is some length, but there is bat speed and strength and shows pull side power potential, topping out at 90 mph exit velocity.

Christopher McKenna C / 3B / Marjory Stoneman Douglas, FL / 2021Uncommitted, standing at 6-foot, 155 pounds, he has a lanky frame that is prime for his growth spurt to add strength. The youngest catcher in attendance, he held his own throughout the day. Defensively, there is athleticism and flexibility. The hands are in the right position and has a feel for catching that projects to be an above average defender as he gets older and adds strength. Offensively, he stands tall and trusts his hands, while still activating his lower half. He has present bat speed and overall offensive upside. High ceiling young catcher all around. |

Austin Palacios C / OF / Mater Lakes, FL / 2019Uncommitted, a stocky 5-foot-11, 205 pounds. Defensively, he had sound defensive actions with pop times ranging from 2.19-2.35 with a catcher velocity of 71 mph. Offensively, he uses his strong lower half well. Is aggressive through the zone, level, but could improve with extension through the ball. It is a simple stride and separation and has more power potential. Had an exit velocity of 81 mph and ran a 7.34 60 yard dash. |

Alex Farmer C / 3B / St Thomas Aquinas, FL / 2020Rankings StateRank: 165 / POS: 30
Uncommitted, at 6-foot, 185 pounds. Defensively, has some twitchy athleticism, with quick feet and a good transfer. Pop times ranged from 2.07-2.14 with some carry and topped out at 75 mph. Offensively, he has some early separation and tends to get out on the front foot, but keeps the hands back and finds the barrel. He does look to pull the ball aggressively, but consistently found the barrel. Had an exit velocity of 84 mph and has some present upside. |
