2018 Florida Trials: Middle Infielder Breakdown

Saturday, July 14, the University of Central Florida in Orlando hosted PBR’s Florida Trials. This event was open to all high school graduating classes (2019 to 2022) and served as an integral identifier for upcoming high-profile, invite-only events, like All-State Games and Future Games, as well as Preseason All-State and the national Super 60 showcase.

Over the course of the next week we will break down each and every player in attendance. We have announced the Future Games and All State Games Invites, and will announce top standouts following all of the positional breakdowns. Today, we take a look at the middle infielders in attendance, in no particular order:

Jacob Starling SS / 2B / Trinity Preparatory, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds with a lean, athletic frame and strength throughout. All around athlete with a feel both offensively, defensively, and on the basepaths. Offensively, he shows twitchy hands with above average bat speed and bat to ball skills. Consistently squared the ball up during batting practice with multiple hard line drives into the gaps. Rangy defender who makes the plays and fields the ball out in front with confidence. Throws to the bag were on line and accurate. Advanced runner, stole multiple bases during gameplay. 



 


Sterlin Thompson SS / 3B / Forest, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds with an athletic, projectable frame. Shows athletic actions up the middle, works under control with sound hands. May slide to a corner if he fills out where he could be an above average defender, but is a solid defender in the middle. Offensively, he has loose wrists and works over the front foot from the left side. Present feel and power potential as he continues to fill out his frame. Had a hard hit single during gameplay. Overall, the tools translate well to game action and has some upside.  



 


Elian Roman SS / RHP / Cypress Creek, FL / 2019

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-9, 165 pounds on a compact, athletic frame and strong lower half. Shows a well above average feel for the middle infield and the actions and instincts has him an above average defender. Ranges backhand and forehand with confidence fielding the ball. Trusts his hands and makes accurate throws to to the bag. Offensively, the switch hitter has potential from both sides of the plate. Right handed he shows a bit more power and left handed shows quality bat to ball skills. Overall, he is one of the top uncommitted middle infielders left in the 2019 class in Florida. 



 


Connor Fosnow SS / 2B / Lake Brantley, FL / 2022

Currently stands at 5-foot-11, 156 pounds with a lot of present athleticism and a very projectable young frame. The tools were intriguing both offensively and defensively. Defensively, he is still growing, but the actions work and project to be well above average as he matures. Hands work, good first step and shows rhythm. Offensively, he works with a small leg kick in rhythm. The lower half is balanced and strong, he clears well and is compact and level through the zone. There is an advanced approach for his age and has present feel for the barrel. Overall, there are a lot of present tools with plenty of upside which makes him a high, young follow.



 


Felix Cruz Jr SS / 2B / South Fort Myers, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-5, 145 pounds with a lean, compact frame. Shows twitchy, athletic actions in the field with confident hands. The feet and hands works very well together, to and through the ball with rhythm. Offensively, there is some present bat speed with quick hands through the zone, staying compact and level. This translated to gameplay when he singled twice. 


Jacob Hartman 2B / 3B / Dr Phillips, FL / 2019

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot, 175 pounds with an athletic frame. Offensively, he has a wide base and simple swing, there is some twitchiness and is level through the zone. He fires his hips well and gets to extension. Creating gap to gap power and an 83 mph exit velocity.  Had a soft hit RBI single during the game.Defensively, he shows a good first step and funnels the ball into his body well. Topped out at 77 mph and ran a 4.64 home to first time. 


Andres Paret 2B / RHP / Archbishop McCarthy, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-11, 140 pounds with a lean, athletic frame. Showed some range defensively when he made a tough play down the right field line on a fly ball for the out. In the infield, the hands works, he stays down works through the ball well. Offensively, he stands tall and has a simple swing. There is some steepness and could clear the backside better, but there is some quickness in the hands. Had an exit velocity of 79 mph.


Gavin Werner 2B / OF / Coral Glades, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Compact frame standing at 5-foot-6, 145 pounds. Offensively, he has a big leg kick for his load. He really sinks into the lower half, working slightly uphill and keeps the barrel in the zone. Defensively, he could simplify his footwork, but the hands work and is solid defender. Topped out at 69 mph, had a 75 mph exit velocity and ran a 4.39 home to first.


Raekwon Williams SS / 2B / Brandon, FL / 2019

Uncommitted. Long, lean frame standing at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds. Defensively, he worked with rhythm and the footwork is above average, fields the ball out in front with good hands, topped out at 66 mph. Offensively, he uses long levers, working out over the front side. Simple swing with some twitchiness, exit velocity topped at 79 mph.


Spencer Mangum SS / 2B / Oviedo, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot, 155 pounds with a wiry, athletic frame. There is present strength and room to fill out. Defensively, he showed some range moving to his right and left with sure hands. Makes the plays and makes accurate throws to the bag, topped out at 75 mph. Offensively, he starts upright and lowers hands in load. The hands work around the body, there is some length, but shows strength to the pull side. Exit velocity topped out at 82 mph. 


Tyler Reynolds SS / 2B / Steinbrenner, FL / 2021

5-foot-8, 130 pounds, he has plenty of time to grow and fill out as he matures. Offensively, the hands work well and the swing is compact and level through the zone. Will see benefits as he learns to get more use from the lower half and becomes stronger. Defensively, he moves well and the hands work. Topped out at 73 mph across the infield.
