2021 Sophomore State Games: North Region Analysis

The 2021 Sophomore State Games took place Saturday, October 30th and Sunday, October 31st at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona, FL. The event featured players from the 2024 class representing their region of North, South, East, or West Florida participating in a pro-style workout followed by 3 total games per region in front of the PBR Florida Scouting Staff.

North Region Analysis

Ben Abram 3B / 2B / Fleming Island , FL / 2024

5-foot-9, 160-pound proportional solid frame. Solid confident at the plate, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 85 mph. Started in a balanced athletic stance with a compact load, then used a short quick stride. Bat speed is quick efficient, displays a short simple swing plane and good extension on his balanced finish. He barreled up multiple balls with loud contact. Line drive approach. Capable while in the infield, recorded position velocities up to 79 mph; has rhythmic feet, sure consistent hands, and a clean fluid exchange. Movements laterally were quick and he fields the ball out front. Showed a high ¾ slot and a loose arm action with decent accuracy to the bag. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.8. Confident on the mound, showed good developing arm speed, also used a high ¾ arm angle with a consistent arm action. Tall-and-fall type pitcher and uses decent effort. Balance point is tall with in line shoulders during delivery. Lands square with balanced finish. Threw his fastball 74-77 mph. had decent both sides of the plate control. His 11/5 curveball (61-63) showed gradual action and arm side control. Shows down in the zone control and fading action on his changeup.

William Alvarez SS / 3B / Westminster Christian, FL / 2024

6-foot, 195-pound physical athletic frame. Athletic confident during batting practice, the right-handed hitter's best exit velocity was 97 mph. (69.40 mph bat speed average). (22.87 mph hand speed average). Starts in a balanced wide stance with a small load, then uses a short quick stride. Bat speed is above average efficient, uses a simple level swing plane and good extension on his balanced finish. Found multiple barrels with a lot of loud contact. Line drive aggressive approach. Athletic confident while in the infield, made throws up to 80 mph; shows athletic smooth feet, a quick clean exchange, and soft sure hands. Movements laterally were athletic twitchy and he fields the ball out front. Used a ¾ slot with a consistent arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the base. Showed his athleticism during the event with a sub-seven 60 time of 6.93.

Brooks Baker OF / Bolles, FL / 2024

5-foot-10, 188-pound solid sturdy frame. Capable raw in the box, Baker had a max exit velocity of 93 mph. (66.21 mph bat speed average). (21.36 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced active stance with a choppy rhythmic load, then used a short quick stride. Has flashed above average bat speed, short upward swing plane and high finish. Found multiple barrels with loud contact. Pull side approach. Capable In the outfield, shows choppy developing feet, consistent hands, and a natural exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were developing. Showed decent accuracy to the base with a consistent arm action and a high ¾ slot. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.04.

Collin Briggs SS / OF / St Johns Country Day, FL / 2024

5-foot-7, 142-pound lean build. Capable in the box, Briggs had an exit velocity of 77 mph. (58.43 mph bat speed average). (19.30 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced wide stance with an arm bar load, then used a controlled long stride. Has a simple flat swing plane, raw developing bat speed and level balanced finish. He barreled up some balls with loud contact. Line drive approach. Capable solid while in the infield, made throws up to 76 mph; had quick rhythmic footwork, a fluid clean exchange, and sure consistent hands. Capable from the outfield, his best throws to the bases were registered at 75 mph; showed consistent hands, choppy in control feet, and a natural exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic twitchy. Used a high ¾ slot with a quick consistent arm action while showing decent accuracy to the bag. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.23.

Cale Cox 3B / RHP / Lincoln, FL / 2024

6-foot-2, 190-pound athletic physical frame. Confident solid during batting practice, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 90 mph. (66.23 mph bat speed average). (18.90 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced athletic stance with a smooth load, then uses a controlled stride. Bat speed is quick efficient, uses a simple loose swing plane and good extension on his balanced finish. Had a lot of loud contact and found multiple barrels. Gap to gap aggressive approach. Solid in the infield, recorded a position velocity of 80 mph; showed rhythmic feet, sure consistent hands, and a clean fluid exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were developing. Used athletic slot with a loose arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the base. Recorded a 60 time of 7.38 at the event. Projectable confident on the mound, showed good developing arm speed, he had a high ¾ arm angle with a moderate consistent arm action. Feel type pitcher who uses decent effort. Has an athletic balance point with even in line shoulders. Lands square with a clean balanced finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 80-83 mph; showed late cutting action and both sides of the plate command. (Max spin 2461; Avg 2301). His 11/5 curveball (69-73) had decent down in the zone control. (Max spin 2607; Avg 2490).

Wil Gregory SS / 2B / Northeast, FL / 2024

5-foot-9, 146-pound lean lanky frame. Athletic confident during batting practice, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 79 mph. (64.17 mph bat speed average). (18.10 mph hand speed average). Began in a wide active stance with a rhythmic active load, then used a big leg kick. Bat speed was flashed raw, used an uphill swing plane and a back foot finish. He barreled up a few balls with some loud contact. Pull side aggressive approach. Capable showed his live arm in the infield with position velocities up to 86 mph; shows choppy aggressive feet, consistent hands, and a natural lengthy exchange. Solid in the outfield, his best throws to the infield topped out at 87 mph; showed consistent hands, a clean natural exchange, and in control feet. Movements laterally were twitchy and he fields the ball out front. Showed decent accuracy to the bag with a quick arm action and athletic slot. Established speed as one of his strengths with an efficient 60 time of 6.82.

Austin Middleton OF / LHP / Buchholz, FL / 2024

5-foot-7, 144-pound athletic projectable frame. Solid capable at the plate, Middleton recorded an exit velocity of 84 mph. (63.34 mph bat speed average). (22.69 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced athletic stance with a tight compact load, then uses a short controlled stride. Bat speed was quick developing, showed a short simple swing plane and high good extension on his finish. He produced some loud contact and found multiple barrels. Line drive base hit approach. Solid in the outfield, his best throw of the day was clocked at 84 mph; showed a natural exchange, sure consistent hands, and rhythmic in control feet. Fielded the ball out front with quick movement laterally. Had a long arm action and clean slot with decent accuracy to the base. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.33. Confident solid on the mound, showed quick developing arm speed, he had a consistent longer arm action with an over-the-top arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and uses high effort. Showed low balance point with even in line shoulders. Lands hard and square with an athletic falling off finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 80-81 mph; has tailing action and control around the zone. (Max spin 1865; Avg 1702). Throws his 1/7 curveball (73-74) with both sides of the plate decent control. (Max spin 2251; Avg 2251).

Austin Musgrove SS / RHP / Keystone Heights, FL / 2024

5-foot-9, 125-pound lanky slim frame. Capable raw at the plate, Musgrove clocked an exit velocity of 80 mph. (60.41 mph bat speed average). (21.80 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced stance with a quick tight load, then used a controlled stride. Bat speed is raw developing, exhibits a short simple swing plane and good extension on his balanced finish. Created loud contact and found some barrels. Line drive up the middle approach. Confident capable while in the infield, made throws up to 78 mph; shows rhythmic in control feet, sure consistent hands, and a natural exchange. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were developing. Decent accuracy to the bases, used a high ¾ slot with a consistent arm action. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.55. Confident capable on the mound, showed good consistent arm speed, he had a short arm action with a high ¾ arm angle. Feel type pitcher who uses decent effort. Showed athletic balance point and even shoulders. Lands square with balanced finish. Sat with his fastball at 74-76 mph. had command decent around the zone. (Max spin 2078; Avg 1969). Anthony Paul SS / 2B / Braden River, FL / 2024

5-foot-11, 160-pound athletic frame. Solid above average during batting practice, Paul's best exit velocity was 91 mph. (69.27 mph bat speed average). (19.12 mph hand speed average). Starts in a balanced athletic stance with a smooth rhythmic load, then uses a controlled leg kick. Kyle Powers LHP / 1B / Providence, FL / 2024

6-foot-1, 175-pound physical athletic build. Capable in the box, the left-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 85 mph. (60.64 mph bat speed average). (17.44 mph hand speed average). Started in a balanced tall stance with a tight compact load, then used a short quick stride. Has a short simple swing plane, quick efficient bat speed and high good extension on his finish. Found a few barrels with loud contact. Line drive approach. Capable while in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 73 mph; has a fluid clean exchange, choppy in control feet, and sure hands. Laterally, movements were developing and fielded the ball out front. Showed a short quick arm action and a high ¾ slot with decent accuracy to the bag. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.53. Solid confident on the mound, showed a high ¾ arm angle and a moderate longer arm action with consistent developing arm speed. Feel type pitcher and shows decent effort. Tall balance point with in line shoulders. Lands square with balanced finish. Threw his fastball 71-74 mph; had slight running action and command arm side around the zone. (Max spin 1931; Avg 1791). Had a 11/5 curveball (59-62) that showed gradual action and occasional command. (Max spin 1614; Avg 1498).

Jack Quinn C / OF / American Heritage Delray, FL / 2024

6-foot, 187-pound solid physical build. Confident advanced in the box, Quinn had a max exit velocity of 93 mph. (65.96 mph bat speed average). (20.12 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced narrow stance with a smooth tight load, then uses a controlled stride. Bat speed is quick above average, uses a simple loose swing plane and good extension on his balanced finish. He barreled up multiple balls with a lot of loud contact. Gap to gap line drive approach. Behind the plate, he produced a position velocity of 72 mph during throw downs; has consistent in control feet, sure twitchy hands, and a quick clean transfer. had consistent pop times of 2.08-2.25. Average flexibility and athletic staggered setup. Decent accuracy to the bag, used a high ¾ slot with a short quick arm action. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.48.

Samuel Simonds 1B / RHP / Fernandina Beach, FL / 2024

6-foot-3, 210-pound solid physical build. Solid raw during batting practice, Simonds best exit velocity was 95 mph. Started in a balanced wide stance with a tight compact load, then used a controlled toe tap stride. Bat speed was above average, used a loose upward swing plane and good extension on his finish. He found multiple barrels with loud contact. Line drive aggressive approach. Capable while in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 74 mph; had a natural lengthy exchange, developing in control footwork, and sure hands. Capable in the outfield, his throws to the bases were maxed out at 75 mph; had a lengthy exchange, consistent hands, and choppy rhythmic footwork. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were developing. Used a high ¾ slot and a longer arm action while showing consistent accuracy to the bag. In the 60-yard dash, he clocked a time of 7.31. Projectable on the mound, showing consistent arm speed he used a long moderate arm action with a high ¾ arm angle. Spencer Stephens 1B / LHP / Bolles, FL / 2024

6-foot-2, 205-pound solid sturdy build. Above average projectable on the mound, showed good consistent arm speed with a short quick arm action and a ¾ low ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and uses decent effort. Showed tall consistent balance point and even in line shoulders. Lands square and soft with a clean balanced finish. Curveball (65-69 mph). Threw his fastball 80-82 mph; showed arm side control and slight running action. (Max spin 1738; Avg 1613). His changeup (73-74) showed fading action and down in the zone command.

Jack Svendsen RHP / St Joseph Academy, FL / 2024

5-foot-9, 165-pound lean lanky frame. Confident solid on the mound, showed consistent developing arm speed, he had an over-the-top arm angle with a long arm action. Feel tilt-and-topple type pitcher who uses decent effort. Showed consistent balance point with uphill shoulders. Lands square with balanced finish. Sat with his fastball at 75-77 mph. has control feel around the zone. (Max spin 2138; Avg 1960). Threw a heavy changeup (68-70) with late action and down in the zone control.

Bray Touchstone C / 3B / J.M. Tate, FL / 2024

5-foot-10, 195-pound solid frame. Athletic confident at the plate, Touchstone recorded an exit velocity of 95 mph. (69.67 mph bat speed average). (21.09 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced narrow stance with a tight load, then uses a controlled stride. Bat speed was flashed quick, used a short loose swing plane and level balanced finish. Ryan Valdes OF / OF / Braddock , FL / 2024

5-foot-9, 170-pound athletic long build. Smooth athletic in the box, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 89 mph. (65.84 mph bat speed average). (21.85 mph hand speed average). Begins in an athletic stance with a tight compact load, then uses a short controlled stride. Bat speed is above average quick, displays an upward loose swing plane and high balanced finish. He created loud contact and found multiple barrels. Up the middle line drive approach. Solid in the outfield, his throws to the bases were maxed out at 82 mph; shows a fluid clean exchange, choppy rhythmic feet, and sure consistent hands. Anthony Wilkie RHP / 3B / Buchholz, FL / 2024

Clemson Commit, 6-foot-5, 205-pound athletic mature build. Athletic advanced at the plate, Wilkie was ranked 3rd with an exit velocity of 100 mph. (71.81 mph bat speed average). Begins in a balanced quiet stance with a controlled arm bar load, then uses a controlled leg kick. Has a short simple swing plane, efficient bat speed and high good extension on his finish. He barreled up multiple balls with a lot of loud contact. Line drive approach. Solid in the infield, his position velocity was registered at 79 mph; has soft sure hands, choppy in control feet, and a natural lengthy exchange.
