Calvary's Offense Prevails in 8-3 Win over Westminster

Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

No 16 Calvary Christian would jump out to an early 1-0 lead over Westminster in the first inning thanks to a leadoff double from Dante Girardi, followed by a single, a walk and a wild pitch. Florida recruit Christian Scott would dominate the first two innings for Calvary, striking out three, working down in the zone with his fastball ranging from 89-93 mph.

Nicky Perez would lead off with a single in the third. Scott would falter with some command with the defense making an error in the third, eventually allowing Westminster to take 3-1 lead. The lead would be short lived though, as a trio of walks would score a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third, tying the game at 3-3.

An error would allow Calvary to take the 4-3 lead in the fifth, as Scott would settle back in, striking out five more Westminster batters. A leadoff home run from Mykanthony Valdez would open the floodgates in what would be a five run sixth inning. The Eagles would compile seven hits to drive in five runs in the sixth, with RBIs coming from Valdez, Pena, Keenan and Knierim. Scott would set the side down in order in the seventh to finish the complete game effort and move Calvary on to the regional finals.

Scout Notes

A bit of a different setup today as we have seen Calvary a few times this year. Some player that continue to impress offensively are Dante Girardi and Ben Rozenblum. Girardi, who led the team with three hits, continues to get stronger and shows an advance approach and compact swing at the plate. Rozenblum, who seems to stay on the barrel, collected a pair of hits and continues to improve defensively behind the plate.

The pair of Florida recruits, Roberto Pena and Christian Scott, showed why they are two top ranked 2018s. Pena, ranked No 21 in Florida in 2018, was 2-3 with an RBI. Scott, ranked No 31 in Florida, through a complete game allowing three runs on six hits while striking out eight.

As for Westminster, starter Jarret Bond battled through a tough Calvary lineup and has a whippy, funky arm action with some life on the fastball in the zone. He was relieved by 2020 FIU recruit Jamar Fairweather. Fairweather is a big strong right-hander and worked 88-91 showing a lot of potential.

With their being upwards of twelve committed players on the field between the teams, there was a ton of talent on both sides, with the offensive depth taking over late for Calvary.
