Cannons Scout Day: Standouts

The Cannons Scout Day took place from January 10-12 in Fort Lauderdale and featured over 125 players from the class’ of 2021-2024. There was a lot of talent in each age group and a great early look at a number of potential impact players this spring. Early this week we broke down the top statistical performers, which you can find HERE. Today we take a look at a few of the initial 20 standouts, with more players to follow coming tomorrow.
2021

David Rossow RHP / 3B / Cardinal Gibbons, FL / 2021The tall, lanky righty has gained some strength and a few ticks on his fastball since we last saw him in the summer. He sat 84-85 and touched 88. He mixes in a tight slider at 70-71, and a changeup at 66-67. Slightly above average command. Has the projectability in the frame and arm talent to come into low 90s velo.

Gavin Conticello 3B / SS / Coral Springs Charter, FL / 2021Rankings StateRank: 164 / POS: 16
USF commit showed his offensive potential all weekend. High exit velocities and a really clean, but violent swing. Starts tall, then gets down into backside and whips his hands through the zone. Ran a 6.92 sixty and threw 82 across the infield. Like the hands and arm in the infield, but the swing really sticks out.

Victor Sanchez SS / RHP / Doral Academy, FL / 2022The strong, sturdy-framed infielder out of Venezuela has loud tools everywhere. He obtains a ton of power in the bat and some of the quickest hands on defense that you will see at the high school level. A name to remember.

Brandon Barriera LHP / 1B / American Heritage Plantation, FL / 2022Vanderbilt commit just continues to show his electric arm and ability to command every time we see him. Sat 89-91 from a really tough slot and touched 93 once. His slider was tight and hard at 80-81 and can be a plus pitch if he continues to harness it. The changeup is around the same speed as the slider, but breaks in the opposite direction. Like the chance that he reaches the mid 90s by his senior year.

Jake Clemente RHP / OF / North Broward Prep, FL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 175 / POS: 27
Really athletic and clean arm. Worked 90-91 and touched 92. Projectable frame. Fastball reached 100% spin efficiency and had an average spin of 2250. Has a simple, repeatable delivery. His secondary stuff is above average, with the curveball having good depth at 70-73, and the changeup having good arm side movement at 82-83.

Derrick Corona SS / OF / Barbara Goleman, FL / 2022Stood out with speed and instincts on the bases and in the field. Stole upwards of 10 bases on the day and seemed to be everywhere on defense. Swing is simple with some bat speed. Found barrel twice in gameplay for a double and a single.

Evan Dobias RHP / American Heritage Plantation, FL / 2022Another really talented arm in this dominant Cannons 2022 rotation is Evan Dobias. The Virginia commit is one of five arms on this team to touch 90. He sat 87-89 at around 2150 rpm. The curveball is sharp at 77-78, and the changeup showed some fade at 80. Really like the delivery and not much effort of the arm.

Brandon Gonsalves RHP / 1B / American Heritage , FL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 60 / POS: 9
One of the more physical standouts, the UCF commit showed a good combo of power and finesse with his high 80s fastball and wipeout breaking ball. He tunnels, the running fastball and sweeping breaking ball well, with each turning the opposite way. He located all pitches well and got several swings and misses. Fastball has a lot of ASR and got in on a lot of fists. Flashed an above average changeup at 80.

Alex Walsh LHP / OF / Oxbridge academy, FL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 165 / POS: 13
Really like the projectability in the frame and live arm. 83-85 with a 2333 spin rate at 95-96% efficiency. Above average slider is 68-70 with a 4:44 spin axis. Changeup showed a 10:14 spin axis with -13 inches of horizontal break at 70-72. Frame and room to add strength suggest more velo to come and he already has the athleticism and body control.

Santiago Ordonez C / 3B / Stoneman Douglas, FL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 73 / POS: 13
Really nice defensive profile with a stocky frame and well above average skills behind the plate. He really stood out throwing out five runners in one game. Has an above average arm, ball comes out quick and easy. Clean blocking and strong hands and receiving skills. Offensively, he has a good inside path to the ball, creating a good line. Has lift in the swing and quickness in the barrel. Advanced catching prospect.

Logan Plasencia RHP / Homeschool, FL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 82 / POS: 12
Big, strong kid has a heavy fastball that reached up to 90. Sat 86-88 with a really live arm. Control and secondary pitches can improve, but his curveball had flashes of being an above average pitch. Has some deception in the delivery, and still has projectability to bump his fastball up into the low 90s.

Dean Guzman C / OF / Pembroke Pines Charter, FL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 45 / POS: 8
The athletic catcher has continued to mature and add strength. Has potential defensively as the athleticism plays and receiving continues to improve. Offensively, he has present gap to gap strength and bat speed. Overall, like the upside and athleticism.

Christopher Scinta LHP / 1B / J.P. Taravella, FL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 61 / POS: 7
Stocky, big frame with some projection. Has clean mechanics, with a very quiet head and a low effort 82-84 mph fastball from 3/4 arm slot. Showed a feel for a changeup and slider with shape and potential to be above average pitches.

Antonio Correa LHP / OF / Pine Crest, FL / 2022Rankings StateRank: 75 / POS: 8
The left-hander showed a lot to like over the weekend. Projectable young frame, with a quick, clean arm. Some feel and present athleticism and primed to make a jump as he adds strength and mature. Up to 84 mph and showed feel for offspeed.

Cole Derks / St. Andrews, FL / 2022Derks is an arm to start following and stood out over the weekend. He has a great frame and a clean arm. Fluid delivery. High spin (2550 rpm) on his 83-85mph FB. CB is slightly above average, sits 64-66, and has a spin rate of 2100-2200. Lanky, proejectable frame with upside.

Keanu Rodriguez OF / LHP / Doral Academy, FL / 2023Another strong 2023 left-hander to really follow. Sturdy frame and an easy 81-82 topped at 83 with a lot more to come from the athleticism and live arm. Showed the potential for two above average offspeed pitches in his 64-67 mph curveball and his 67-68 mph changeup. Both had above average movement.

Justin Breitenstein 1B / RHP / Estero, FL / 2023Large, projectable frame for a 2023 on the younger side of the class. Has 2-way potential as a left-handed power bat and right-handed power arm. Swing has surprising control and leverage for his tall frame. Arm showed some athleticism and an upper 70s fastball that will jump a ton in the coming years.

Joshua Agriesti C / 1B / N/A, FL / 2024The physical 8th grader really stands out with his power potential from the right side. High exit velocities and a knock for the barrel. Has a lot of moving parts, but it works for him right now as he swings with a lot of intent to do damage and he still maintains his gifted bat to ball ability. Whether he can keep the same swing or has to tone it down as he faces more velo will remain to be seen, but the tools are loud and he plays really hard. Also stood out defensively, where he blocks and receives well and potential to be an above average defender.

Mason Barela SS / 2B / Jupiter, FL / 2024Stocky frame with some strength. Has good actions in the infield and above average bat speed and bat to ball. Plays with a lot of energy and tenacity. Gets on base a ton and has great instincts, stealing several bags in gameplay. Liked how he played all weekend.

Christian Hamilton OF / RHP / Westminster Academy , FL / 2024Supreme athleticism and a projectable frame have him committed to Miami as an 8th grader. The arm strength really stands out in the outfield, along with how much ground he covers. Really smooth, floating strides. The switch hitter currently has more power from his natural right side, but he’s working on bringing along the left side. If he adds that consistency from both sides, it will make him that much more dangerous, especially with his speed from the left-handed batters box.
