FL 2017 ProCase Top 5 Performers

By Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

Following our second annual ProCase, we will break down each player in a series of articles over the next week. Today we take a look at the top five performers from Saturday's ProCase. There was an extremely talented group of mostly 2018 grads with a few 2017's and 2019's as well. The top five is determined from both the performance from Saturday as well as the evaluation and projection of the player.

 #5

Luca Tresh C / OF / Clearwater Central Catholic, FL / 2018

North Carolina State recruit. 6-foot-1, 185-pound strong, wide-shouldered frame. A quality catching frame, he gets in quality receiving position and will continue to improve with reps. He has a strong arm with a clean transfer that resulted in consistent 2.0 pop times that will improve as his footwork and transfer becomes a bit quicker. At the plate, he has a balanced, wide setup with a simple load. He is short to the ball with a level path through the zone. He shows some pull power, but is more of a gap-to-gap guy currently with power potential. He has an advanced approach and a feel for the barrel which translated to the game with two hard hit singles. Overall, there is a lot of above average tools that will make him a very interesting overall follow.

#4

Jordan Lala OF / Steinbrenner, FL / 2018

Miami recruit. He is a 5-foot-10, 175-pound athletic outfielder who is high waisted with long legs and looks like he will still grow a few inches and has plenty of room to fill out.  6.83 runner, and he looks even faster than that. Showed a quality presence in the outfield.  Ranged side to side with twitchy steps, and confident ball skills. Quick release with a strong arm that was accurate and had carry.  Will be able to play centerfield at the next level.  At the plate he hits from a balanced stance, slightly more the shoulder width, with a small stride that kept his lower half balanced and engaged. He has loose hands with a lot of whip through the zone with easy above average bat speed. He shows gap-to-gap power and shows the ability to be an above average hitter all around. He has a ton of room to grow into his projectable frame along with the easy actions that projects him to make big jumps across the board.

#3

Pablo Garabitos OF / LHP / Lakewood Ranch, FL / 2018

South Florida recruit. The 6-foot-1, 175-pounder has a long limbed frame with an elastic, athletic body.  Moves well with athletic strides, and showed off a long, loose arm from the outfield. Ran 6.89 60 yard dash. Looked the part, and the throws had some carry with accuracy. Shows a lot of overall athleticism and moves well side to side. Projects as a solid corner outfielder who may be able to play centerfield too.  At the plate, hits from a balanced stance in a slight crouch with his hands held set back. He has loose wrists and a feel for the barrel from the left side. He stays in the zone well, but could generate more from the lower half. Showed pull side power in batting practice, but was more impressive gap-to-gap. This translated to the game where he went 2-for-5 with hard contact four out of the five at-bats. May have been more impressive and projectable on the mound where from a high 3/4 slot, he showed a loose, whippy arm action with a fastball that was up to 88 with arm side run to it, and created a downward plane. The fastball would sit at 86-88 mph and have some late sinking life and produce some swings and misses. Fastball velocity played up because of a near plus changeup that he featured at 77-78 mph. Also featured a 1/7 curveball at 72-73 mph that showed a quality shape with potential of a solid third pitch. Extremely athletic, but the arm may have high upside in the long run.

#2

Mason Denaburg C / RHP / Merritt Island, FL / 2018

Florida recruit. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound RHP/C/OF has a long, athletic body that looks like it has added some muscle since the fall and looks bigger then 6-foot-3.  In the outfield, he moves well, and showed off an easy, quick arm with carry.  Every throw he makes looks effortless, and jumps out of his hand. At the plate, he stands tall and with a medium leg kick trigger that stays balanced through the swing. He showed easy pull side power and could generate more staying in his legs and using the lower half a bit more. His hands can get away from the body at times, but when he stays tight he has an extremely short, quick swing with a feel for the barrel and big power potential. Behind the plate the athleticism is on display with good flexibility in his setup and soft but strong hands allow him to receive very well.  There is a lot of potential defensively, as he can really control his body and as he learns how to position himself could be a plus receiver.  After going through the full workout, and playing the entire game with some innings behind the plate, he hopped on the mound. He was still 90-93 mph in his inning of work with effortless velocity, and he looked like he was tired. He throws from a 3/4 slot with a lot of life on the fastball. Also showed a 71-73 mph slider with a quality shape and when he throws it harder will have a potential to be an above average pitch. Changeup was 81-83 mph with late fading action that he also showed a feel for. He is an all around athlete with an extremely high ceiling. As he continues to log more innings and the natural athleticism will clean up a few of the inconsistencies, look for him to make some big jumps all around on the mound.

#1

Robby Martin OF / RHP / Jefferson, FL / 2018

Florida State recruit. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound left handed hitting outfielder may have been the most impressive performer on the day. This is no surprise as he came in as one of the top performers during his junior season, hitting .420 with 9 home runs and 44 RBIs on the year. Martin has a long, lean frame, with broad shoulders and room to fill out. He has a fluid swing with a path that stays in the zone a long time while creating a lot of easy bat speed. Most impressively is how well it translated to the game. Martin went 4-5 with two singles and two doubles on the day. He showed an advanced approach with the ability to drive the ball the other way. He stays short to the ball, especially for how long he is. There is some pull power presently, but a lot more to come. He showed some athletic actions in the outfield with enough arm. He projects as a corner outfielder with the potential to have above average to plus power. Martin will be very intriguing to follow this summer to see how he performs against more of the top arms.
