FL Power25 Update: Week 2

The 2023 high school baseball season has completed its second week of games. Each week we will update our Power25 HS Rankings with Risers, Fallers, and Newcomers to the rankings each week. We look forward to covering high school games this spring and hearing your feedback on who you think should be ranked where. Take a look at our Week 2 update.

Week 2

Risers

#5 Montverde Academy

Montverde is back to being playoff eligible this spring, and they have a great team for it. 5-1 on the season so far. They took on some tough out of state opponents this past week. Wins over Faith Academy (AL), Hoover (AL), and Loganville (GA) proved Montverde has a top team throughout the southeast.

#10 Viera

Viera slides into the top 10 of our rankings after a 2-0 week in which they didn’t allow a single run. They started with a 10-0 win over ES Edouard - Montpetit out of Montreal, and finished with a 12-0 win over Eau Gallie. Viera is off to a great start with both pitching and hitting looking strong.

Fallers

#13 Mitchell

At 3-2, Mitchell’s season hasn’t started the way they’ve wanted to. Despite losses to both Dunedin and Jesuit, they’ve shown an ability to stay in games and continue to fight with top player Aidan Miller out of the lineup. Mitchell has taken care of business in their other three games beating Fivay, Boca Ciega, and CCC.

#21 Bartram Trail

An 0-2 week slides Bartram Trail down to #21 in the rankings. They lost 1-run games to Forest and Nease bringing them to 3-2 on the season. This is a talented team who will look for a bounce back week in Week 3.

NR Plant City

Plant City drops outside the Power25 for the first time after an 0-2 Week 2. A 6-4 loss to Lennard started the week followed by a 15-2 collapse on Friday night against Strawberry Crest. Plant City will have to bounce back quickly if they want to stay on track.

Newcomers

#15 Archbishop McCarthy

Archbishop McCarthy has been one of the most impressive teams to start the 2023 season. 7-0 out of the gate with pitching and hitting in form. They went 4-0 this past week against out of state opponents. McCarthy beat Pike County (GA), DeSoto Central (MS), Hueytown (AL), and Sparkman (AL). Look for them to continue their impressive start against some tough South Florida opponents this spring.

#18 Canterbury

Canterbury is off to a 4-0 start in 2023. They went 2-0 this past week with two impressive wins.

They started the week defeating #20 Naples 9-1 and capped it off with a 3-1 win over IMG Black. The Cougars have only allowed 4 runs on the season while scoring 40 themselves.

#24 Dunedin

3-1 to start the season, Dunedin has a dangerous team in 2023. They added a couple transfers that have been big for them to start the year. LHP Trey Beard leads the way coming off an impressive 2022 where he led the state in strikeouts. Dunedin already has a win over #13 Mitchell and will look to add to that resume.

#25 Westminster Christian

Westminster always competes year in and year out and this year is no different. 5-0 to start the 2023 season including a big win over American Heritage this past week. The Warriors have a younger squad this year but talented enough to make some noise.
