FL Summer Trials: 2019 Player Breakdown

The 2017 Summer Trials took place June 28th at Lake Brantley High School. This event consisted of players from the 2018-2021 classes, all of which took part in a 60 yard dash, pro-style workout, batting practice and a bullpen for pitchers. Today we break down the 2019 graduates in attendance

Noah Janney RHP / West Orange, FL / 2019

With a frame prime to shoot up a few inches and add fifteen pounds, the projection is there. Presently, he works from a high 3/4 slot, with a slight drop and drive, he gets quality use from the lower half and could gain even more. The arm works quick and is a clean easy arm action. His fastball ranged from 84-86 touching 88 mph, with tight spin and life. Lands in line consistently with a clean footstrike. The slider also shows tight spin, with hard downward two-plane action and potential to be a swing and miss pitch at 74-76 mph. Also featured a straight changeup, with quality arm speed that ranged from 81-83 mph. There is a lot of upside and projects to have the ability to start at the next level.

Justin Turk OF / 2B / Steinbrenner, FL / 2019

Definition of athlete, Justin showed great feet and feel in the outfield with a average to above average arm while flashing a 6.68 60yd dash. Offensively, he showed good bat speed while working to the ball with a controlled violent swing. Tend to be a little out in front occasionally and would get steep in his swing. When staying behind the ball he showed ability to use the whole field on a line. A lot of twitchiness in his actions and has a lot of upside.

Paxton Ellison RHP / 3B / Mount Dora, FL / 2019

Strong, durable frame right handed pitcher with long arms and big, strong hands showed composure on the mound with a clean delivery, lands consistently in line with quality tempo. Showcased command of the strike zone with above average changeup at 75-76 mph that has the potential to be a plus pitch as well as a slider at 66 mph. Fastball topped out at 86 with heavy life working mostly in the 84-86 mph, jump in velocity is inevitable. The elbow worked below the shoulder at times, which could cause some command issues, but has a chance to make some big velocity and overall jumps as he continues to improve

Ryan Fischer 1B / 3B / Lake Brantley, FL / 2019

Long, lanky right-handed hitting first baseman has broad shoulders and long legs with plenty of room to fill out. Athletic, long strides, ran a 7.35 60 yard dash time. Actions worked at first base, the footwork could improve, but the hands work out in front and showed sound footwork at the bag. Offensively, he uses his length to create leverage in the swing. Although the path can be steep, he generates above average bat speed for his class and the leverage creates power potential with the best exit velocity of the day at 95 mph. The path will have to shorten and level out some, but the bat speed and leverage is there to show power potential in the future.

Kaden Schlichenmaier 2B / RHP / Boone, FL / 2019

The right-handed infielder showed a simple, short level swing. With a small leg kick trigger, he worked line-drives from gap-to-gap with a feel for the barrel. Generated an exit velocity of 82 mph off of the tee. In the field, the hands worked well, out in front of his body. Topped out at 76 mph across the diamond.

Kolsen Powers C / 1B / IMG Academy, FL / 2019

Physical frame, demonstrated athleticism in the field with good feet and feel around first base, hands worked well. Showcased behind the plate with a constant quick transfer and quick feet, pop time ranged from 2.1 - 2.3. Would see improvement in pop time with arm strength/long toss program. Offensively, his swing stayed on plane throughout with ability to drive the ball to all fields. Has some length at time, but the physicality and strength give him power potent

Zebadiah Marquis OF / Gainesville, FL / 2019

The 5-foot-7, 135 pound outfielder showed a strong arm with accurate throws that showed strong carry, topping out at 86 mph. Came through the ball very well and moved well in the outfield. Offensively, the right-handed hitter starts slightly open.The load gets to an arm-bar at times, but still works level through the zone. Found the barrel often, working line drives from gap-to-gap. Some twitchy actions and bat speed.

Ty Hooks C / 1B / Palmetto, FL / 2019

A strong-bodied, stocky catcher showed sound defensive action. Hands work well in receiving. Footwork is sound, but could improve in quickness. Transfer is clean and quick, resulted in accurate throws ranging from 2.0-2.2. Offensively, the right-handed hitter has a wide base and uses a simple, small le lift trigger that kept him on time. Has a strong lower half that he uses well, staying balanced through the swing. The path stays in the zone a long time and showed the ability to consistently find the barrel. Seems to have quality bat to ball skills and could benefit from being a bit more aggressive through the zone, but overall everything projects.

Dylan Wood C / RHP / Pasco, FL / 2019

The physical, 6-foot 190-pound C/RHP has present strength. Defensively, he shows a strong arm with pop times that ranged from 2.1-2.2. Offensively, he right-handed hitter works from an upright stance. Creates some bat speed with strength with an exit velocity of 88 mph. There is some steepness in the path, but when level and on time he shows gap-to-gap power. On the mound, he features a simple, up-tempo delivery and consistently lands in line. With a clean, short arm action, the fastball ranged from 81-82 mph. Also featured a curveball with tight spin and some depth at 68-69 mph, a changeup at 66-68 mph and a slider at 71 mph. Showed a feel in the zone, consistently throwing strikes.

Joseph Simmons C / 3B / Edgewater, FL / 2019

The stocky, right-handed hitting catcher hits from an upright stance with a medium leg kick trigger. Showed the ability to make adjustment from round to round. The path was steep at times, but when he was level and short through the zone, he drove balls gap-to-gap. Defensively, he showcased pop times ranging from 2.3-2.4. The feet work well , but could see improvements with an improved transfers.

Bryan Scribner OF / Bartram Trail, FL / 2019

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound outfielder ran a 7.6 60 yard dash. From the outfield, he come through the ball well with accurate throws, topping out at 81 mph. The left handed hitter, starts from an open stance and works closed to a wide base. Uses the lower half well and stays connected to upper half, creating a short path to the ball and slightly uphill path. Showcased some present pull side power, with an aggressive swing that should see more power with added strength. The swing works and will have a chance to be an above average hitter with power potential.

Caleb Stallings RHP / OF / Apopka, FL / 2019

Strong, athletic frame, showed great tempo on the mound with quick pace.Showed a short quick high 3/4 arm action with a fastball sat 80-85 mph with arm side run, that worked downhill with some tilt.Commanded the fastball down to both sides of the plate. Showed a present above average changeup at 74-78 mph with fading action with the potential to be a plus pitch. Also featured a slider that has tight spin, that he threw for strikes, at 76 mph. Overall, a projectable arm with three projectable pitches.

Brant Barlow RHP / 1B / IMG Academy, FL / 2019

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound RHP/1B shows sound defensive actions at first. Offensively, the right handed hitter has a leg kick trigger with quick hands through the zone. He tends to cut himself off at times with a steep path through the zone and rotational at times. Drops hands during the load, but found the barrel and created an exit velocity of 82 mph. On the mound, he works from a sidearm slot. Loose with deceptive fastball from 75-78 mph. Also featured a 66 mph slider and a 63 mph changeup. Would not a a fun at-bat for a right-handed hitter.

Logan Bryan RHP / 3B / Dr Phillips, FL / 2019

The 6-foot, 200-pound 3B/RHP showed sound infield actions topping out at 80 mph. Offensively, the right handed hitter has a leg kick trigger. Some rotational actions in the swing, but shows strength and bat speed. Present pull side power, with potential for more. Generated bat speed out in front with an exit velocity of 93 mph. On the mound, he features a simple delivery. Tends to leak open with the lower half and not get all of the possible use from the strong lower half. Works downhill with some tilt with a fastball ranging from 82-84 mph with some heavy life. Also spun the curveball at 72-74 mph and a changeup at 75-76 mph.

Jacob Lerdo SS / 2B / Lake Brantley, FL / 2019

Defensively, showed quick athletic feet with an accurate arm. Would benefit with arm strength program and will see improvement as he grows. Offensively, Lerdo has quick hands and worked on plane to the ball. He used all fields with ability to show and make adjustments from round to round. Bat speed worked well, will see improvement as strength continues to come.

Christian Nobles SS / C / Trinity Christian Academy, FL / 2019

The 5-foot-7, 170-pound infielder has a square shouldered, stocky frame. Defensively, the actions work with short quick steps. Hands work well out and front and shows sounds actions that project well at second base. Offensively, the right-handed hitter has a medium leg-kick with with a short, simple swing. The path is level through the zone, showed consistent, hard contact with line drives from gap-to-gap. There is some present strength and twitchiness with potential.

Robert Minotti SS / OF / New Smyrna Beach , FL / 2019

Has a long, lean frame with a lot of quick twitch. There is some stiffness in the actions, but athleticism makes up for that for now. Has a quick first step in the infield, the range could improve with a more relaxed set up and pre-pitch looseness. Hands work well and has an above average arm, topping out at 88 mph. Offensively, he is aggressive through the zone with above average bat speed. He tends to get over aggressive and rotational, taking away from the natural leverage and bat speed. When on plane, the ball jumps off of the bat and with a bit more rhythm and looseness could see big jumps offensively. Overall, very athletic with a lot of tools and potential.

Ahmon Smith SS / OF / Lake Mary, FL / 2019

The 6-foot, 140-pound has a long, lanky, projectable frame. Defensively, he shows sound action with a quick first step, with the hands working well, although they get under his body at times. Ran a 7.25 60 yard dash with the gate working well. Offensively, from a slightly open stance he uses a leg kick trigger to get on time. Uses the lower half fairly well, but still more can be gained with better connection to his top half. The path works well, it is short to the ball and level through the zone. When he was aggressive, he showed bat speed and hard line drives from gap-to-gap.

Luke Marquis SS / RHP / Gainesville, FL / 2019

Strong, stocky build, showed a good arm in the field with good footwork. Could see his future behind the plate as he showcased a 2.09-2.15 pop time with good feet and quick consistent transfer. Offensively, he showed good bat speed with ability to drive the ball in the gaps. Needs to stay in his legs more during his swing, his body moves up and down which is causing too much head movement in his load. On the mound he has a quick short arm action with a heavy fastball ranging 78-81 mph. Also feature a curveball at 66-67 and a changeup at 71-73 mph.
