FTB Fall Tryout Notebook

By Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

This past weekend FTB ran its fall tryout, a three day event, which includes a bullpen session, pro-style workout and instruction day as well as multiple games. I was able to cover two of the three days which included the bullpen session and the games played on Sunday. There were a lot of talented young players in attendance, here are a few who stood out over the two days of coverage.

Riley Greene. LHP. Hagerty HS, FL (2019)
The Florida commit was one of, if not the most, impressive arm in the bullpen sessions. He is athletic, lean and wide shoulder with room to grow and fill out. His fastball ranged from 80-83 touching 85 behind a clean, easy 3/4 arm action and some late life and sink. He tended t slow down his arm with a 70 mph changeup and would get around the slider at times, but it showed some depth at 74 mph. He also showed and smooth left handed swing with some pop. He is very projectable and the arm works really easily. I would expect him to stay in the top part of his class for a while.

David Vazquez. SS. Westland Hialeah. (2017)
The NC State commit was just as good as always this weekend showing a quicker first step and better actions at short than seen previously. The bat continues to play as he continues to get strong. The path is slightly uphill and stays in the zone a long time in which he more often than not finds the barrel. The projectable and athletic frame, above average bat speed and improved actions at short make him very interesting and would not be shocked if he receives some pro interest going forward.

Juan Gonzalez. SS. Plant City HS, FL (2019)
UCF commit. A tall, lean and athletic right handed hitting shortstop was impressive offensively and defensively. At the plate he shows good rhythm with a leg kick which generates above average bat speed on a slightly uphill path. Looks to be some power potential. At short he looks confident and under control with soft quiet hands and accurate throws.
