2018 Florida Trials: Outfielder Breakdown

Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

Saturday, July 14, the University of Central Florida in Orlando hosted PBR’s Florida Trials. This event was open to all high school graduating classes (2019 to 2022) and served as an integral identifier for upcoming high-profile, invite-only events, like All-State Games and Future Games, as well as Preseason All-State and the national Super 60 showcase.

Over the course of the next week we will break down each and every player in attendance. We have announced the Future Games and All State Games Invites, and will announce top standouts following all of the positional breakdowns. Today, we take a look at the outfielder's in attendance, in no particular order:

Jalen DeBose OF / Seminole, FL / 2020

Committed to West Virginia shortly after the event. The 5-foot-10, 150 pound outfielder has a lean, athletic frame with room to fill out. High ceiling outfielder with above average athleticism. Throws have carry, with a loose, athletic arm, topping out at 86 mph. Offensively, he had a toe tap trigger and stands upright. The hands are very quick, can get a bit rotational at times, but when he gets into the lower half and stays behind and through the ball, he shows power potential. There is present bat speed, a lot of athleticism and overall a high ceiling from DeBose.

Michael Sutherland OF / Bishop Moore, FL / 2019

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds on a long, athletic frame with room to fill out. The frame is not only projectable, but also shows present athleticism, with a 4.35 home to first time. He moves well in the outfield and has athletic actions, but could benefit from more rhythm through the ball with a quicker release. Offensively, he stands upright and really trusts his hands. The hands are quick and keep the swing compact and level through the zone. Clears the backside well, but could get into the lower half a bit more and access the lower half strength. There is present bat speed and  strength with more to come in the future.

Jacob McMillin OF / 3B / Newsome, FL / 2021

Currently stands at 5-foot-11, 162 pounds with a projectable, athletic frame. Offensively, he stands tall and has a simple load. There is some steepness in the path as he drops his hands and has length at times. He clears the backside and utilizes the lower half well, creating an exit velocity of 82 mph.Defensively, he is very sound mechanically in the outfield. Moves well and come through the ball exceptionally well. Could benefit from a quicker release. Topped out at 71 mph. Ran a 4.95 home to first.

Aiden Roe OF / RHP / Desoto County, FL / 2022

Tall, lanky frame with long legs standing at 6-foot, 142 pounds. Offensively, the long levers create some length, but when synced up they create leverage. The swing works uphill and as he matures and adds strength, the swing will become more consistent and his ability to use the leverage to his advantage will improve. Defensively, he shows some athleticism and will continue to improve as the body develops and he adds strength.

Dalton Vonderstrasse OF / SS / Williston, FL / 2020

Uncommitted. Currently stands at 5-foot-9, 150 pounds on a compact frame. Defensively, he showed a quick arm, topping out at 77 mph. Throws were accurate, but could benefit from a quicker release. Offensively, he has a simple swing and creates a quality barrel angle early which translates to a quality path through the zone. He stayed on the barrel during BP and there is present strength from a balanced lower half. Shows some athleticism and fee on the basepath as well, steal a pair of bases.

Jeremiah Thomas OF / 3B / Royal Palm Beach, FL / 2021
