Florida Unsigned Spotlight

By Matt Huck

Every Friday National Scouting Supervisor Nathan Rode provides a roundup of insider recruiting information and commitments throughout the PBR coverage area: The Buzz. Click Here to take a look at this week’s National Buzz. With that in mind, let’s take an in depth look at some of the top unsigned prospects in the state of Florida with detailed scouting information.

Wilis McDaniel, OF, Lincoln, 2015
2/13/15 - 5-foot-9,165 pound outfielder who plays football as well. McDaniel has a smaller frame but has very good strength and is very athletic. In the outfield he covers a lot of ground and gets good jumps on balls. He has very good speed that will allow him to remain in center. He has an average outfield arm with a loose over-the-top release. At the plate he is slightly open, relaxed, gets nice separation, with some loft in swing. He has a quick bat and great swing plane with good plate coverage. Hits with authority to all fields and has very good power for his size. Against Wakulla he was 3-3 with a GS, 3B, BB, and six RBI's.

Will Boggs, SS, Timber Creek, 2015
2/11/15 - Uncommitted senior. 5-foot-11, 160 pound infielder with  a loose lean projectable body. Loose actions with some softness in hands. Close to avg ML arm. Comes and gets balls. Aggressive. Athletic. Moves well. Some quickness in bat. Lacks strength. Good hand eye. Makes a lot of contact. Uses the whole field. Overall game will improve with added strength. Uncommitted senior. Can play middle infield somewhere at the next level.

Brett Tivnan, OF, IMG Academy, 2016
2/4/15 - Uncommitted Junior. 6-foot-1, 180 pound outfielder who also pitches. Tivnan has a lean athletic and wiry projectable body. In the outfield he covers ground well and has an average to above-average arm with good actions. At the plate he has a simple approach with a small load, but a quick, flat swing that allows him to make consistent contact. The bat stays through the zone. The ball jumps off his bat as he hit a 2-run home run against Clearwater. On the mound he has a short quick arm with an OH slot. When he breaks his arm goes straight back and up by his ear, and when he lands, he is in line. His fastball is 81-83 MPH and he has a 67-68 11/5 curveball that works well when kept down in the zone. Runs a 6.9, 60 yard dash.

Dante Torino, LHP, North Marion, 2016
2/18/15- 5-foot-11, 180 pound left hander with a strong, athletic body with a strong lower half  that suit him well as a pitcher. He has a high ¾ arm slot with an arm that is loose and whippy. Takes ball out in line to second base and lands in line. Occasionally will fly open early with his front side. His fastball has good arm-side run that I saw at 81-84 mph in the fourth and fifth innings. He has a good 12/6 curveball that has good depth, breaks late, and he keeps it down for strikes at 73-75 mph. Against Trinity Catholic he had 5 1/3 IP, 6 K's, and 3 runs allowed.
