Florida Insider: Orlando Scorpions Tryout

By Rob Sidwell
Florida Scouting Director

The Orlando Scorpions took to the field Saturday after a lengthy bullpen session the night before. After watching the 2016 position players workout with a pro style infield/outfield, batting practice and then play in games, Don Jacoby gives his take on a few guys that stood out.

+ 2B Carlos Cortes 2016 (Oviedo HS) is a 5-foot-8, 185-pound second baseman with a stocky compact body with good overall athleticism. Strong hands and wrists. Good hit approach. Fluid, quick, line drive stroke. He drove the ball to right and left centerfield with doubles type power. Has good defensive actions up the middle. Moves well laterally. Loose arm with enough carry to play position. Could become a 2016 draft. Verbally committed to South Carolina.

+ 2B Nick Derr 2016 (IMG Academy) is a 6-foot, 178-pound middle infielder with good overall athleticism. Live athletic body. Quiet hit approach. Takes the bat head to the ball and generates good bat speed with line drive power. Short compact quick stroke. Good hitters hands. Defensively, he showed some actions at short along with good carry on throws to first base. Offensive guy that is probably more suited for 2B. Could become a 2016 draft. Verbally committed to Florida St.

+ C Samuel Fockler 2016 (Jupiter HS) is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound catcher with a body that’s not very big, but is physical and showed a good hit approach with some quick hands and line drive power. His receiving skills, along with release has a ways to go but displayed raw arm strength with on line carry.

+ 3B Riley Hogan 2016 (Edgewater HS) is a 6-foot-3, 170-pound infielder that plays a corner infield position with good size and physical projection. Switch hitter with a similar approach from both sides of the plate. Quick stroke with strength in swing. Gets backspin on the ball with line drive power now, but  has a chance to really drive the ball with home run power as he physically matures. Fair actions defensively. His throws have enough carry now with potential solid arm strength. Verbally committed to South Carolina.
