Kevin Maura throws a Complete Game, Del Castillo Homers in Gulliver Prep 4-0 Win

Doug Freeman
Florida Scouting Director

In the first round of the 5A District 16, Gulliver Prep would move on thanks to a complete game effort from Kevin Maura and home run from Adrian Del Castillo. Gulliver would jump out to a first inning, 1-0 lead thanks to a bases loaded fielder's choice off of the bat of Lucas Costello. Keys Gate would minimize the damage in the first though, working out of the bases loaded, one out jam without allowing another run.

Starting pitcher, Enzo Evangelista of Key Gate, would settle in through the next three innings. Working around three walks and a hit batter over that span, he would not allow a run. Kevin Maura would mostly dominate through the first four, striking out five hitters and allowing four hits. Miami commit Adrian Del Castillo would leadoff he fifth for Gulliver. Del Castillo, who was intentionally walked and pitched around for another walk in his first two at-bats, would finally get a pitch to hit and drove it deep over the right-field fence to extend the Gulliver lead to 2-0.

Gulliver would go on to add a pair in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a pair of singles and a pair of hit-batsmen to extend the lead to 4-0. Rey Hernandez of Keys Gate would get one back in the seventh on a flare single. Keys Gate would get the tying run to the plate before flying out to center to end the game and send Gulliver to the district finals.

Scout Notes

Adrian Del Castillo, C, Gulliver Prep (2018)
Miami recruit. The left handed hitting catcher was impressive all the way around. Defensively, he shows an average arm with pop times in the 2.0 range. He is an above average receiver with strong wrists and shoulders with flexibility and above average blocking skills. Offensively, while not getting much to hit, he made an impact when he did. Walked three times, he hit one of the three fastballs he saw in the zone deep over the right field fence. The barrell stays in the zone a long time and shows above average bat speed. Overall, a guy who is on the rise as an offensive catcher.

Lucas Costello, SS, Gulliver Prep (2020)
Uncommitted shortstop had a number of opportunities at short. He is lean and athletic, there is some stiffness, but has athletic range. Very solid, above average defender. Was 1-4 with an RBI and has above average bat speed. There is some steepness, but has present bat speed and is  high follow.

Rey Hernandez, MIF, Keys Gate (2020)
FIU recruit. Stocky frame at 6-foot-1, 195 pounds. Defensively, hands works and moves well but may slide to third as he gets older. The bat plays. The left handed hitter works with rhythm and aggression. There is above average bat speed and was 2-4 with a double and an RBI. He has a whippy bat and bat to ball skills that will be one to watch going forward.
