Levi Kelly Tops the List of 2018 Prospects

By Greg Williams
WV Director of Scouting

Sometimes the big stage can overwhelm a young prospect, regardless of their level of talent. Such has not been the case for Nitro HS freshman Levi Kelly. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound righty took to the mound for his first start as a varsity athlete less than two weeks ago with countless Division I coaches in attendance. Kelly got the start for the Wildcats on the first day of the Mingo Bay Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC and did nothing but improve his stock in six innings of solid work.

Kelly showed above average tilt to his fastball that sat 85-87. The freshman topped at 90 mph and touched 89 mph as late as his final inning (6th). Kelly's 74 mph curveball showed advanced bite with solid arm speed leading to a handful of his 12 strikeouts. Kelly has shown a capable changeup but did not utilize it on this day.

On the young season Kelly has worked eight innings, yielding six hits and two earned runs for a 1.75 ERA. His 18 strikeouts are eye popping but potentially more impressive is the fact that he has walked just one hitter.

Although the initial PBR West Virginia player rankings for this class will not be released until the conclusion of the high school season, following is a sneak peek at the initial PBR overall rankings across the 22 state coverage area.
