Maroudis, Peterson lead No. 3 Calvary past Tampa Catholic

Rocco Iervasi
PBR Florida Director of Operations/Area Scout

Tampa, FL - I headed out to Tampa Catholic last night to see the Crusaders take on No. 3 Calvary Christian. 2022 Michael Richards got the start for Tampa Catholic and looked sharp. Richards was able to mix speeds and keep the Calvary lineup off balanced allowing 1 run through the first 4 innings.

On the other side, 2023 NC State commit
Landen Maroudis got the start for Calvary. Maroudis would go four innings allowing 1 run with 4 strikeouts.

Calvary started off the scoring on a Blake Opie squeeze bunt. Liam Peterson and Matt Rose singles brought in runs to extend the lead to 4-0. Calvary opened up the scoring in the sixth with RBI singles from Nick Monile, Andrew Tess, and Landen Maroudis. Matt Rose drove a RBI double to center to give Calvary a 9-1 lead.

2023
Liam Peterson came in relief for Calvary. He finished the last 3 innings allowing no runs while striking out 8. Maroudis added an RBI double in 7th for his third hit of the game. Calvary would go on to take this one 10-1 moving their record to 4-0.

Scout Notes

2023 Landen Maroudis, RHP/SS (NC State)

Maroudis has become one of the top arms in the 2023 class and showed his tools on Thursday. The 6-foot-3, 185 pound right hander got the start for Calvary and cruised early. Sitting mostly 93 mph in the first with a tight 75-78 mph slider. Maroudis was mostly 90-93 for the rest of his outing. Athletic on the mound, Maroudis explodes downhill as the ball jumps out the hand creating easy velo. This wasn’t the best outing I’ve seen from Maroudis as he finished with 4 walks, but his ability to generate swings and misses with both pitches is at an elite level. Maroudis is a true two-way and got things done on the offensive end as well going 3-5 with a double and 3 RBI. He has elite bat speed and creates leverage to get to any pitch in the strike zone. Look for Maroudis to continue to make jumps throughout his last two years of high school and be a top prospect to watch in the 2023 MLB Draft.

2023 Liam Peterson, RHP (Florida)

Peterson came in relief for Calvary and continues to impress every time I’ve seen him. He has definitely grown and gotten more physical now standing at 6-foot-5, 195 pounds. Peterson has continued to make jumps with his fastball and the off-speed has also gotten better. He mixed three pitches for strikes last night and was able to generate 8 strikeouts in 3 innings. Peterson sat 90-93 mph with his fastball up to 2464 rpm. He mixed a sharp curveball at 74-76 mph with a 2633 rpm spin rate. The best pitch of the night might have been the changeup that buried hitters at 83-85 mph. Peterson looks to have front line starter stuff with that three pitch mix, and I am looking forward to seeing the continuous jumps throughout the next two years.

2022 Matt Rose, 2B (USF)

Rose has been one of my favorite high school players to watch since the first time I saw him in 2019. A true gamer that works hard at his craft and always just hits. The USF commit is always on time and on the barrel and showed it last night going 2-4 with 2 RBI. He sat on a breaking ball and hammered it up the middle for his first hit of the game. Later, he showed some launch in his bat, jumping on a first-pitch fastball and driving it off the center field fence for a double. The 2020 Future Games alum continues to be an all around great baseball player and should be able to make an impact early when he gets to USF.
