No. 14 Bolles Stifles Sandalwood 3-1

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Sandalwood Saints made a short crosstown trip to Bolles School on Tuesday evening to take on the Bulldogs. Bolles scored early in the game, and rode six shutout innings from RHP Cole Burgess (2020) to victory, defeating Sandalwood 3-1.

The Saints put pressure on Bolles right from the get-go. Leadoff hitter LF Tyler Mills (2019) started things off with a low line drive into right field. Aggressive out of the box, Mills took advantage of the right fielder mishandling the ball to advance to second base. CF Jered Geis (2019) moved Mills over with an infield groundout, setting up three hitter RF Carson Bayne (2021). Bayne chopped a ground ball in the infield, sending Mills in motion. However, the Bolles infield was able to react quickly and cut down Mills at the plate, ending the threat.

What Sandalwood could not accomplish in the first, Bolles did relatively quickly. CF Jackson Mayo (2021) led off with an easy double to left field. 1B Connor Stoll (2019) then turned on one into right field, scoring Mayo. Stoll tested the arm of Bayne from right field, learning quickly not to run on him. Bayne delivered a laser to second base and caught Stoll before he reached the bag.

Bolles continued to push their lead in the second inning. The Bulldogs were able to load the bases with two outs through a series of walks and a single by 2B Jack Brady (2019). LF Chance Moore (2020) stepped to the plate looking for his second hit of the game. Moore squared up a pitch and drive a line drive just out of the reach off the leaping shortstop, scoring two runs to make it 3-0.

Starting pitcher Cole Burgess danced around the Saints lineup for six shutout innings. He was able to scatter four hits while walking three and striking out three. The Bulldogs were cruising to a shutout through six and two-thirds innings. RHP Connor Boyer (2020) relieved Burgess and got the first two batters out.  A walk to Mills brought Geis up to the plate. With the left fielder shading towards center field, Geis drove a ball down the left field line for a run scoring stand up double. That was all the Saints could manage though, as Baynes popped out to first base to end the game.
