Prep Baseball Report

PBR Florida ProCase Preview

PBR Florida Staff

This Sunday, May 20, Prep Baseball Report will be hosting its third annual Florida ProCase at IMG Academy in Bradenton. Since launching in 2016, the invite-only showcase has quickly become one of the most prestigious events for area juniors, giving them a platform to perform in front of the scouting community as they head into their final offseason before their senior year. The previous two ProCase events have heralded some of the state’s top prep prospects in the following year’s draft.

Sam McMillan and Freddy Tarnok are two of the five players from the inaugural showcase selected in the 2017 draft, and Mason Denaburg, Andres Antonini, Robby Martin, and Luca Tresh are all examples of last year’s ProCase-ers preparing themselves for next month’s draft. Denaburg, namely, is candidate to be taken in the first round and is presently ranked No. 9 on our PBR Draft Board, that includes both college and high school draft-eligible prospects.

This year’s group of junior invitees looks as promising as ever, too. There are nearly 40 names on this year’s roster and over three-quarters of them are already committed to play Division-I baseball. Among the group attending are 15 top-50 prospects within Florida’s junior class. Among them is Jake Holland (Montverde Academy; Miami), the top-ranked catcher, nationally, in his class and the No. 30 overall. Ray Torres IV (IMG Academy; Louisiana State) is the nation’s No. 2-ranked junior backstop and he’ll be in attendance on Sunday as well.

On the mound, LHP Carson Palmquist (Riverdale; Miami) and LHP Paul Labriola (Cardinal Mooney; Clemson) will be unleashing their arsenals.

A pair of two-way talents, will also be featured. Kevin Martin (St. Brendan; Florida), will make his way out as a primary RHP with big velocity, but has also shown power from the right side. This will mark the first time that we’ve been able to see the 6-foot-4, 230-pound RHP and slugger at an event. On the other corner of the infield you’ll find Andrew Roberts (Trinity Preparatory; Florida), the state’s second-ranked third base prospect, and the nation’s No. 3 – he’s also the No. 16-ranked prospect in his state’s class. It’s been a year now since we’ve had the pleasure of watching Roberts go to work in the batter’s box where he’s demonstrated some patience that should pair well with his power projection down the road. Roberts has also shown upside and arm strength on the mound.

Of course, this is only scratching the surface of what’s to come on Sunday. Stay tuned for a complete breakdown of the event next week, including a statistical analysis, top performers post, as well as reports on how the uncommitted fared – this is in addition to a full report on each of the near-40 players invited coming in the weeks ahead.
