Monteverde (FL) vs Mountain View Recap

Blake Davis
State Director, Georgia

Lakepoint Sports Complex played host to some of the top talent in Georgia this weekend. The regional event featured some of the best underclassmen the state has to offer. In this weeks scout notes we focus on a few of the up and comers at the event.

The most anticipated outing of the weekend for my money was the competitive (2019) youngster Gavin Collyer from Mountain View High School matching up with a very talented Montverde Academy club from Florida. Montverde brought a physical & athletic team to town led by shortstop Nander De Sedas The Prep Baseball Report 23rd overall ranked prospect in the 2018 draft class. Collyer went toe to toe with Montverde for 6.1 innings, before eventually giving up a walk-off double to outfielder Johann Campines and taking the loss.

Gavin Collyer RHP / Mountain View, GA / 2019

The narrow framed and very lean Clemson commit was on the attack all game. Effectively using a true CB 75-78, both for strikes and for swings and misses below the zone. Changed shapes with the pitch by altering arm slot slightly. He was aggressive with his fastball 85-90 both north and south, changing hitters eye levels and setting up his curveball. Does a good job of establishing and pitching off a fastball that showed plus hand side life. Collyer did struggled with his release point at times causing him pull the ball and getting cut action but quickly made adjustments and kept battling.

After all was said and done Collyer tallied 11 punchouts and allowed just 4 hits in the loss. Even though Mountain View did not get the outcome it wanted, they showed with Gavin Collyer on the mound they can hang with some of the top competition in the country. Future is bright for Collyer and he still has room to grow and develop. I am most intrigued by the attribute that can't be taught in his moxie and over all fearless nature on the mound.
