St. Petersburg College Holds on to Defeat College of Central Florida

Clearwater, FL - It was a chilly night in Clearwater as St. Petersburg College took on College of Central Florida. Getting the start for SPC was freshman right-hander, Channing Young. Young was very effective keeping Patriot hitters off balance all game long. He would go six innings, allowing three runs (two earned), with six strikeouts. He was working a three pitch mix and was getting plenty of swings and misses. His fastball was 86-89 mph and was very effective on the inner half to righties. He added a fading 81-82 changeup and a 76-77 breaking ball.

Sophomore David Mata got the start for Central Florida, but only threw one inning. Freshman Jackson Taylor would come in relief and throw the majority of the innings. Central Florida jumped out to an early lead in the first after singles from Matthew Cedarburg and Colton Vincent. St. Pete put up two runs in the bottom half including an RBI double from Chris Williams. SPC would never give that lead up.

A big three-run 5th helped SPC open the game up. They scored two runs on a single from Gabriel Rincones. Drake Rodriguez added a double as well, and had three hits on the day with two RBI. Central Florida would lead a comeback as Gabe Cabrera hit a two RBI double in the 6th. They added two more runs in the 7th to make it a one-run game. SPC added a run in the bottom of the 7th and would hold on to win 7-5.
