State College of Florida vs Florida Southwestern State: Quick Notes

Rocco Iervasi

State College of Florida and Florida Southwestern State College opened up their 2020 seasons last night at the brand new CoolToday Park in North Port, FL. After a back-and-forth battle, State College opened the game up and came away with a 6-2 victory. Today, we will take a look at some quick notes from yesterday’s action.

Marc Davis, RHP, SO, FSW

Davis came in to pitch for only one inning but his stuff was electric. He threw a scoreless inning allowing just one hit while recording two strikeouts. He was sitting 91-94 mph with the fastball with a sharp breaking slider at 81-82 mph and was getting plenty of swings and misses on both pitches. Davis also added a fading changeup at 84 mph to complete his three-pitch mix.

Axel Melendez, C, FR, FSW

Making his first career college start behind the plate, Melendez kicked off the game’s scoring with a solo homer to right in the 3rd inning.

Rook Ellington, OF, SO, SCF

Ellington, a Florida State commit, was consistently on the barrel in almost every at bat yesterday including a two RBI single that helped open the game up for SCF.

John Malcom, 1B, SO, SCF

Malcom is a big, physical 6-foot-2, 215 pound first baseman who impressed yesterday with his ability to go the other way multiple times. The lefty hitter turned two balls back the other way with a single and double to left in the game.

Richard Rodriguez, SS, FR, SCF

The freshman shortstop from Puerto Rico instantly caught my attention the moment he took his first ground ball. His hands were quick with a well above average arm. He seemed to make a play on every ball that came near him and made it look easy.
